CONSEQUENCES

Basic Assumptions• Inappropriate behaviour is motivated by the need to gain attention

• When the motive of gaining attention is satisfied, it manifested

inappropriate behaviour associated with other motives

• By helping students find other ways to satisfy their needs, inappropriate

behaviour can be terminated

• By having teachers help students explore why they behave as they do,

children can understand their own motives and consequently eliminate

misbehaviour

• Praise students’ efforts, not just their end results

Exercising Power• Engaging in power contest never benefits the teacher: de-escalate, don’t

escalate

• Class discussion and present a more useful

Exacting Revenge• Student claim to have been dealt unfairly after their attention seeking is

thwarted, so they attempt to “get even”

• Provoke others to retaliate destructive classroom behaviours

• Teacher must realise that students lash out because they are hurt

• Confront the student privately and discuss
