BAZ Productions are delighted to present

dreamplaya reimagining of

August Strindberg’s A Dream Play.

Join us for this site-responsive journey through the sleeping

consciousness of ‘the dreamer’, exploring the root of

human suffering through an examination of modern life.

Performing in the Vaults beneath the bustling Waterloo station, we offer the audience

a chance to slip from their busy ‘conscious’ lives and drift

into an underground ‘unconscious’ exploration of

their dreams through an interdisciplinary combination of

experimental music and performance.

BACKGROUNDdreamplay is a response to Strindberg's A Dream Play, first performed in Stockholm in 1907. His play rejected realism in favour of a new expressionistic form which penetrated the meanderings of subconscious desires and fears through an exploration of gender roles and materialism.

Strindberg referred to A

Dream Play as 'child of my

greatest pain'

Strindberg's preface to the play reads as follows:

‘The characters split, double, multiply, evaporate, condense, dissolve and merge. But one consciousness rules them all: the dreamer's; for him there are no secrets, no inconsistencies, no scruples and no laws. He does not judge or acquit, he merely relates; and because a dream is usually painful rather than pleasant, a tone of melancholy and compassion for all living creatures permeates the rambling narrative’

BACKGROUNDBAZ Productions was formed in 2009 with the aim of making theatre for an audience seeking something alive and limitless, plunging them into the heart of the story.

BAZ explore this through site-responsive projects that are inspired by classic texts; working in this way allows us to create unique and visceral events. Our work to date has seen us take over a crypt in Central London, an art gallery in Shoreditch and a Lookout Tower on the coast of Aldeburgh. We have dabbled in Shakespeare, woven Greek myths together and delved into the nightmarish dreams of Strindberg. Our quest is always to make work that fizzes with life.

OUR WORKING METHOD

Our work to date has developed a rehearsal process that keeps actors physically and actively engaged as they play, our aim being to create work that has immediacy and is thrilling to watch. We enable our audience to engage with the work in a direct way; continually aiming towards a spontaneous, unique and collaborative performance every night.

Our working method is centered around the actor's training, aiming to develop a state whereby they are continually connected to the moment (spontaneous), physical free (dexterous), emotionally engaged (honest) and striving toward a goal (active).

Our training incorporates the use of music, movement, improvisation, games, mindfulness and text in a holistic approach that develops an ensemble awareness.
