Hydrological Cycle Recap: Domino Cards

Homework Check:

1.What is Dynamic Equilibrium?

2.What are feedback loops?

3.Which type of system is the hydrological cycle?

4.How might different paths exist in the cycle when climate changes –i.e. hot or cold

Drainage Basins - what is a water budget?

What is a Drainage Basin?

It is the land area or catchment area drained by a single river and its tributaries.

A imaginary line called the watershed separates one drainage basin from another. The watershed usually follows a ridge of high land. Any water falling on the other side of the ridge will flow through the adjacent drainage basin

Page 4: Drainage basins and water budgets

•The initial tributary is a first order stream

•When 2 first order streams join they become and second order and so on

•A basin is described in terms of the highest order of stream it contains

3. Stream ordering and Drainage density

The drainage density of the stream is found by measuring the total length of all the streams within it and dividing it by the area of the whole basin.

For homework read the sheet on stream morphometry and make additional notes. Include some factors which affect drainage density on your notes

Page 5: Drainage basins and water budgets

The balance between the input and output of a drainage basin may be shown as a WATER BUDGET GRAPH

1. When precipitation is higher than Evapotranspiration there will be a

WATER SURPLUS

2. When Evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation there will be

SOIL MOISTURE UTILISATION occurring, this leads to WATER DEFICIT

3. When the soil is recovering from deficit we term it

SOIL MOISTURE RECHARGE

4. We then Consider over a whole year whether a place has a ………… positive or negative WATER BUDGET

Pupils to come up and explain what happens in each diagram.

Imagine this was an exam question (GAS)Copy these down and

add you own notes to

explain what is occurring

Where would field capacity be?

Do we think that the UK and Greece

have an overall positive or

negative Water Budget?

One pupil to come and explain what is happening here- use as many key terms as possible

Homework:

•Finish off explanation for Navrongo

•Go back over today’s work and ensure that you are happy with all the

ideas and key terms.

•Read pages 4-8 in the textbook in preparation for next lesson
