There are dragon stories from around the
world In the Americas, we see dragons pictured in
rock carvings and stories by the Illini tribe. These dragons live by or in the water. They are called Piasa-Bird
In MesoAmerica
The Aztecs have Quetzalcoatl, the Plumed Serpent, which was mix of a bird and a rattlesnake.
Australian Rainbow Serpent
This dragon lives in Australia but has been seen in stories in Africa, Haiti, and New Guinea. Some say it is blue others say it had yellow and red stripes.
Eastern Dragon
The Chinese ( 5 toes), Japanese (3 toes) and Koreans (4 toes) have some of the most wonderful dragons. These dragons are fierce but are often good luck.
Count my toes!
Western Dragons
These bad boys have a evil reputation for eating princesses. They are often pictured fighting against knights like St. George, who saved the princess in a famous painting by Raphael.
Imagine what kind of dragon might be
hatching?Draw your own dragon.
Does it have wings? Scales? Is it brightly colored?
Is it fierce and mean? Or friendly?
Big or small?
Does it have scales or horns?
All these possibilities and more can make your dragon YOURS.
When drawing think about
Add texture…smooth, or maybe bumpy scales?
Do the scales make a pattern? Patterns create visual interest.
Contrast…Make some things bright light colors and other dark rich colors. Some things curvy and other things pointy. But at the same time—repeat colors. It is a good idea to big 1-2 bright colors and 1-2 dark rich colors. This way your drawing has unity.
Adding details to your dragon will make it come alive.
Where did dragons come from?
Some people think that ancient people found dinosaur bones and thought they had found the bones of a dragon.
Nile Crocodiles and their skeletons made for great dragons. Nile crocodiles can be 18 feet long.
Whale bones might have been mistaken for dragon bones.
Or one theory is that people just fear predators…so we created a really big one made from different fearsome beasts for our stories and legends.
