Instructional Design (1/2)

• Instructional design is the practice of creating instructional experiences which make the acquisition of knowledge and skill more efficient, effective, and appealing

• The process consists broadly of: – Determining the state and needs of the learner, – Defining the end goal of instruction, and – Creating some "intervention" to assist in the transition

• Ideally, the process is informed by pedagogically

and andragogically tested theories of learning and may take place in student-only, teacher-led or community-based settings

• The outcome of this instruction may be directly observable and scientifically measured or completely hidden and assumed

• There are many instructional design models but many are based on the ADDIE model with five phases: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation

• As a field, instructional design is historically and traditionally rooted in cognitive and behavioral psychology, though recently constructivism has influenced thinking in the field

1a. Analyze your learners and gather as much information as you can on them

2b. Analyze your broad goals for the lesson or unit. What are you hoping to achieve?

2a. Identify learning objectives. What specific skills/knowledge do you wish students to obtain?

2b. Identify outcomes. How will you know that the students have achieved your learning objectives? How will you assess learning?

3a. Develop your instructional strategies. How will you facilitate students in learning the objectives you identified so that they are able to achieve the outcomes you’ve set for them? 3b. Plan the logistics. How will you group students? How will you arrange the classroom? What tools and materials will students have available to them?

4. Implement. Try out your lesson plan or unit with students

5. Evaluate. Were you successful? Did students learn? Did they have fun doing it? What should you change for the next time?

Learning Theories (1/3)

• Conceptual frameworks describing how information is absorbed, processed, and retained during learning – Behaviorism: Learning is the acquisition of a new

behavior through conditioning and social learning • Classical conditioning: Behavior becomes a reflex

response to an antecedent stimulus

• Operant conditioning: an antecedent stimuli is followed by a consequence of the behavior through a reward (reinforcement) or a punishment

• Social learning theory: an observation of behavior is followed by modeling

– Transfer of Learning: What one learns in school somehow carries over to situations different from that particular time and that particular setting

– Cognitivism: learning is an internal mental process where the educator focuses on building intelligence and cognitive development. Individual learner is more important than the environment

– Constructivism: Importance of active involvement of learners in constructing knowledge for themselves. Students are thought to use background knowledge and concepts to assist them in their acquisition of novel information

– Transformativism: Takes place by discussing with others the reasons presented in support of competing interpretations, by critically examining evidence, arguments, and alternative points of view. Transformative learners move toward a frame of reference that is more inclusive, discriminating, self-reflective, and integrative of experience

• Quality varies for different digital asset formats, in a million ways

• Technology advances also affect digital asset quality for a learning resource

• As formats emerge and evolve and output devices get more sophisticated, learning objects quickly become obsolete

Contrast, Color Accuracy, etc.

Compatibility

• Even the most widely-used file formats may face compatibility issues

– Flash support, Java support

• Digital Educational Content developed in proprietary formats or formats that are no longer supported, can quickly become useless

– Cost of development stays the same but depreciation stops when the object stops being used (or not?)

• Metadata Quality is mostly manual

– Automation is OK but for important metadata, manual is the only way to go

• Metadata Quality is primarily pro-active

– When annotation finishes, the harm is done

• Metadata Quality is still difficult to quantify

– Some quantitative metrics there but not yet comprehensive
