Dye-Sublimation Printing

Dye-Sublimation is a printing process that uses heat to transfer dye onto medium materials such as a plastic card, paper, or fabric. The sublimation name is applied because the dye transitions between the solid and gas states without going through a liquid stage.

There are two methods of using dye-sublimation technology. 1. Direct-to-Card (DTC)/ Director Card Printing2. Reverse Image/ Re-Transfer Printing

Direct-to-card (DTC)/ Director Card Printing

In direct-to-card printing, the print-head comes in contact with the card. The ribbon which the card printers use is commonly known as YMCKO. Each of the panels YMCK provides a portion of color to the card, the combination of panels provides a full range of colors which makes up full color images. The specific section of the panel is heated and the color is heated onto the plastic card.

Reverse Image/ RetransferWith the reverse image process, the print-head prints dye-sublimation images onto a clear film called Intermediate Transfer Media (InTM). This image is then fused to the surface of a card with heat and pressure.
