Lighting

This first picture I have used is to explain the birthday cake sequence in the film. The lighting of the cake is glowing and bright, and has a warm orange colour which makes the audience feel warm and welcome, and gives off an inviting vibe. The second photo I have used is of the corridor sequence just as the lights are starting to flicker. The lighting here is extremely bright but is getting darker, hinting there may be shadows going off behind her. This gives the impression she is safe but there may not be safe for much longer. The third picture I have used is of the corridor sequence when Sara is running away from the darkness. The colour used is a dark green colour, which makes the area feel eerie, lighting is very dark and the shadows appear to be closing in on her, giving the impression something is chasing her, and makes the audience anticipate something bad. The lighting is different in all of these to give different concepts.

Location• The location of the first picture I used is in complete darkness, except for

the daughter and her cake. It is designed to be in complete darkness as it is a foretelling of what happens towards the end of the film in the caves. The colour orange is used because of the candles on the cake, and also because it uses it to show warmth and to make the scene look inviting for the audience. The location of the second picture is in the hallway/corridor of the hospital Sara is in. It is designed to have the shadows starting to appear behind her, to make the audience anticipate something bad happening. The location of the third picture is also in the corridor of the hallway, but this time Sara is running away from the darkness that appears to be closing in on her. This is designed to make the audience feel like something bad is about to happen, however it is actually used to show Sara’s nightmare and what is happening in her head, as when she gets to the end of the corridor Beth grabs her and everything goes white, therefore the nightmare is over.

Costume

• The costume in the first picture is worn by Sara’s daughter, and she appears to be wearing something casual, like a pajama top (we can only see her from chest height) which is because it seems to be her birthday so she is dressed to relax. The second picture shows Sara in a hospital gown, which is worn because it is after her car crash and has been taken to the hospital so has been dressed in hospital clothes, hinting her crash was that bad her clothes would’ve been ripped etc. The third picture shows Sara again in the corridor but running away from the darkness, wearing the same hospital gown.

Props

• The birthday cake in the first picture is used to represents the girl’s birthday, and the heartbeat monitor shows she is in a hospital but makes the audience anticipate whether Sara is dead or not because you cannot actually hear her.

Sound

• The only diegetic sound in the film is at the start with Sara’s daughter, when she is blowing out the candles on the birthday cake. All of the other sounds in the film are non-diegetic, for example when Sara is running down the corridor, when she is grabbed by Beth etc.
