ANNUAL REPORT TO THE CHANCELLOR, 2007-2008DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, LEISURE, AND EXERCISE SCIENCE

I. Major Accomplishments 1. The amount of new external funding awarded to HLES reached a record total of

$2,365,890: http://www.graduate.appstate.edu/orsp/proposal/awards/.Including the second year of the $180,000 National Institute of Health grant, the current grant total for HLES is $2,545,890.

2. Funds secured through internal university sources remained stable to total $27,855.

3. Faculty from HLES met with representatives from the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, North Carolina. After a visit and research presentation, HLES was invited to join the seven sister institutions on the campus. Details about the specific nature of HLES’s research presence on the campus are currently being discussed.

4. HLES committed to and began development of an on-line degree program in Health Promotion in response to a program request from Blue Cross/Blue Shield. This will be an interdisciplinary degree program incorporating course work from Health Promotion, Communication, Family and Consumer Science, and Sociology and Social Work.

5. HLES organized an interdisciplinary obesity grant team involving fourteen community partner agencies. This grant is currently being written and has been placed as the top priority grant in ASU’s Federal Agenda.

6. Presentations about HLES research efforts were made to both the ASU Alumni Leadership Counsel and the staff of the Office of Academic Advising.

7. The number of classes providing service learning opportunities again increased.

8. All undergraduate degree programs are experiencing moderate growth in enrollment.

9. The graduate degree program in Exercise Science reached a record enrollment of thirty eight students.

10. Not only did the number of publications and presentations by faculty increase but there were a greater number of faculty members involved in these activities.

11. The number of faculty attending professional meetings increased.

12. Involvement in instructional or faculty development activities increased. Eleven faculty members attended ten Hubbard Center events, and two faculty members received Teaching Enhancement grants, two faculty members received Textbook

Page 3: Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science

Grants, three received a Registration Grant, and one received an External Scholars grant.

13. Using the Delaware Study salary comparisons, hiring salaries for junior faculty increased allowing us to hire at more competitive salaries.

14. Academic affairs helped HLES purchase a Flow Cytometer instrument valued at $230,000. Additionally a Motion Analysis System was purchased at a cost of $62,000. These purchases allow the research teams in HLES to internally process all tissue and blood samples, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars of grant funds to pay for external processing and analysis. This also facilitates the awarding of future grant monies.

15. Education and Technology financial resources provided to HLES by the College of Fine and Applied Arts reached a new high of $160,000. These funds allowed the department to purchase significant technology upgrades and additions for classrooms and laboratories. Additional field based data collection and analysis technology will enable faculty to embark on several new research projects. All classroom computers were upgraded.

16. International involvement rose from twenty five to twenty eight activities and from twelve faculty participating to fourteen. Faculty involved in direct international program leadership increased.

17 Faculty have become more involved with the students outside of the traditional classroom setting. Advising student major clubs, service projects, and mentoring relationships in research are the primary activities engaged in with students.

18. A successful HLES Advancement Board meeting was held in September 2007.

19. The department concluded its third year using the Reappointment, Tenure, Promotion, and Merit document. This RTPM document allows each faculty member to report activities in the categories of teaching, scholarship, and service in a quantitative fashion. The faculty voted to adopt this performance evaluation process on a permanent basis at the end of the Spring 2008 semester.

20. HLES conducted five searches for positions in Athletic Training (1), Exercise Science (3) and Recreation Management (1).

21. Undergraduate and graduate students were involved in a record number of research projects resulting in presentations and publications. Assistance from the Office of Student Research (OSR) has contributed to this increase in scholarly work.

22. HLES hosted an international exchange student for the Spring 2008 semester. Gian Pietro Emerenziani from the University Institute of Motor Sciences in Rome, Italy,

Page 4: Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science

is a first year doctoral candidate. He worked with HLES researchers in the area of biomedical aspects and methodological preventive and adaptive physical therapy.

23. One HLES faculty member completed an Off Campus Scholarly Assignment (OCSA) in Valencia, Spain for the Fall, 2007 semester. Research was completed with international colleagues at The University of Valencia.

II. Major Problems1. Although salaries are improving, difficulty in recruiting and retaining

quality faculty members due to salaries and cost of living remain a concern.

2. Space will continue to be a concern for activity classes, physical education major classes, and faculty office space. The dedication of the Varsity Gymnasium for academic purposes daily from the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. needs to be maintained. Athletics and non-academic activities often interfere with Physical Education instruction.

3. Funding for major equipment purchases is less of an issue due to the excellent support HLES received during the 2007-2008 academic year. Although we were able to make major improvements this year, ongoing internal and external funds are needed to purchase major laboratory equipment and to upgrade existing equipment. Increased financial development activities need to be undertaken, and are underway utilizing the services of the HLES Advancement Board.

4. Student access to required courses in departments outside HLES is still a major issue. More cooperation and communication between HLES Program Directors and Department Chairs will be necessary to ensure continued non-major course access. To this end, one HLES faculty member was approved as an adjunct faculty member in the Biology Department, and successfully taught a two semester Anatomy and Physiology course this year. This will aid Exercise Science, Biology and Chemistry pre-professional majors in their medical school preparedness and increase their admissibility.

III. Report on Retention Activities

Academic advising is an important factor contributing to the retention of majors. The academic units within our department have taken steps to insure that each declared major seeks departmental advisement before registering for classes. Therefore, all TRS sheets are distributed to faculty advisors. Class scheduling is conducted in a student/faculty meeting. Lastly, copies of student schedules are kept in each student’s departmental file. Similar procedures are followed for graduate students.

Page 5: Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science

HLES offers several courses that are part of the learning communities program. Feedback from instructors regarding these courses and this program is very favorable. Two faculty members are also developing a new course for consideration as a new General Education core curriculum course.

Non-classroom activities were encouraged through student professional associations in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Education, and Recreation Management. Therefore, we have student professional associations in four of our five undergraduate majors. Each of these organizations is sponsored by a full time faculty member. This involvement is recognized as part of the tenure, promotion, and merit system within our department. Involvement in professional organizations through attendance at meetings is encouraged and supported through these groups. In addition to professional involvement, these organizations are engaged in community service projects. Graduate students are active in the Graduate Student Association and in their respective professional organizations as well.

IV. Other Comments

The achievements of the Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science this year have set the stage for the future of the department. A significant amount of equipment was purchased with Education and Technology resources allocated by the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts as well as by an unprecedented number of externally funded grants. Technologically equipped instructional areas will enhance the faculty’s ability to provide instruction appropriate to the learning styles of today’s students. Laboratory equipment purchased this year also poises the department to apply for additional external funding, conduct cutting edge research, and introduce students to the latest in health and human performance technology.

HLES has benefitted this year from the developing partnerships between HLES and Watauga Medical Center, Appalachian Regional Health Care, the Be Active-Appalachian Partnership, and the Mountain States Health Alliance. The Institute for Health and Human Services also holds promise for the department yielding opportunities for collaborative research and community and regional outreach.

APPENDICES

Appendix A: Unit Mission Statement

The fundamental purpose of the Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science (HLES) is to enhance the human condition through development of physical, mental, and social health. HLES believes this mission can be achieved by applying art and science to the ideal of developing mind and body as an inseparable entity.

Our constituency consists primarily of undergraduate students, the University community, the local community, and allied groups, organizations and practitioners. Our five interrelated academic units of Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health Promotion, Physical Education, and

Page 6: Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science

Recreation Management serve our constituents through teaching, research/creative endeavors, and service designed to prepare professionals that will impact the well being of humanity. Although united by a common mission, each academic unit has its own distinct body of knowledge. Consequently, appropriate degrees acknowledging the specific program of study are awarded at the end of each academic semester.

To continue to accomplish our mission, the following goals have been established:

1. Provide undergraduate and graduate professional degrees in each unit of study;

2. Provide service courses that will enable students to make informed decisions about their life-styles. Specifically, the Physical Activity/Wellness courses in the General Education Curriculum will be upgraded this coming year in preparation for the new Core Curriculum. Each one hour Physical Education skills course will contain an academic component focusing on physiological principles of personal fitness and lifetime wellness as well as a pre-post physiological assessment.

3. Provide opportunities for reassigned time for teaching enhancement, research/creative endeavors, and service activities; and

4. Provide professional service to our constituents.

Appendix B: Equal Opportunity and DiversityThe department completed five faculty searches this year. The national statistic demonstrates a larger pool of males than females. Our applicant pool was consistent with this statistic. Various avenues for advertising the positions were utilized, including on-line listings that target specific populations. The selection of candidates to be interviewed and the interview process followed the required guidelines. The searches resulted in the hiring of three males and one female faculty member. At this time (May 2008), two positions remain unfilled.

Appendix D: Faculty Activity

1. Teaching Performance, Instructional Program Development, and Outstanding Teaching Achievements

Our department continues to assess teaching both summatively and formatively. Summative assessment is accomplished using the Individual Development and Educational Assessment (IDEA) instrument. The departmental Teaching Enhancement Committee developed a set of procedures that has standardized the administration of the instrument this year. In addition to the IDEA instrument, our formative process includes peer observation and feedback as well as post-tenure review. The summative data are used in tenure, promotion, and merit decisions; the formative data are not. The IDEA is a nationally recognized instrument in evaluating teaching with high degrees of reliability and validity. Our faculty typically ranks at or above the national mean for courses with similar criteria. The HLES Teaching Enhancement Committee iscurrently examining strategies to expand the summative data concerning overall teachingperformance.

In addition to the IDEA instrument, the HLES faculty decided to implement a quantitative performance evaluation system for scholarly and service activity this year. This Reappointment, Tenure, Promotion and Merit (RTPM) system is the result of three years of committee work, and allows each faculty member to assign point values to each professional activity engaged in during the academic year (April 1, 2007-March 31, 2008). The Excel scoring report forms were submitted to the Chair, and served as the basis for each faculty member’s annual conference. This was the third year that the RTPM system was used on a trial basis. The faculty voted in April 2008 to adopt this RTPM system on a permanent basis. This RTPM system also allows the HLES Annual Report to be compiled in a more timely fashion.

Our faculty continue to use class management software to enhance student learning. All of our classrooms are equipped with computers and data projectors which permits the use of various information sources in the delivery of course material. Additionally, many faculty have implemented service learning and experiential components into their classes and are using case based instruction as alternative methods of disseminating information.

2. Graduate and Undergraduate Student Advisement Activities
