Universal adult franchise means that every adult in the country has the right to vote no person can be denied voting right on grounds of caste ,creed, religion, gender etc.it is an essential feature of democracy as it exhibits political equality.It had been a long struggle to achieve universal adult franchise across the world . In some countries only people owning property could vote. Women had no voting right. In usa the blacks could not exercise voting rights until 1965.

It shows political equality. It encourages young people to participate in the electoral processit initiates people in the act of choosing their representatives

Democracy's supreme power rest's with people. People have the choice of deciding either directly or indirectly , who can be their representatives. Which is done through the process of election. Election is the procedure through which people can elect, by voting , their representatives for running the government

Election is the contest between different candidates for the same position. Some would be winner and some loser. The party which gets maximum number of votes forms the government. Sometimes there are also individuals who contest on election without belonging to any party . earlier people used to cast their votes by putting a stamp on the ballot paper. Today the process has been simplified with the introduction of electronic voting machine (EVM) . Importance of elections:- elections are the means of expansions Of the public will, by electing candidates of their choice people participate in the governance of their country etc.

The political parties can be national or regional in nature . If a party is recognized in four or more states , it is called a national party, for example :-congress , bharatiya janata party. If a party functions at state level or regional level, it is called a regional party

The government is formed By an alliance of two or more political parties. Such government is called coalition government.
