Managing Technology in the Classroom
4
Equipment Management Considerations
• Identification system
• Numbering scheme
• Distribution to users
• Protective cases
• Cleaning
• Tools needed for repairs
• Storage / charging (?)
• Check-out system
5
5 Tips for Moving Toward 1:1• Start Small – Select one tool or platform to
engage students in short instructional task.
– Example: Edmodo entrance & exit slips; Padlet collective learning board
• Community first, connections second– Web-based rules, norms ,
procedures, and expectations are the same as classroom rules
– Develop a contract for use and digital citizenship
• Let Learning Lead– Plan lessons --- then seek tools
• Take risks, and your students will reciprocate– Trying something new will be
time-intensive, keep trying– Be a patient, learning takes time,
practice
• Keep audience and authenticity at the core– Link learning activities (w/ tech) to
authentic experiences for learners

What if I don’t have 1:1 … … 1:7 …or even 1:20?
• Pre-Class Organization– Policies/Use Agreements– Use team system
• E.g. Sport Education roles
– Placement of technology– Create “cheat sheets”
• In-Class Management– Lead up to full use
• Prep your patience
– Use proximity to monitor – Allow students to lead
• Assign students to help
– Keep it student-centered– Station rotation signal

Action Research in Action

Stages of Action Research
1. Clarifying Vision and Target (Pre-Planning)2. Deliberate Planning (Planning)3. Implementing Action and Collecting Data
(Action)4. Reflecting on Data and Planning Informed
Action (Result)

Your Variables
IF…(Your Actions /
Independent Variables)
Ideas for your technology action research project?
THEN…(Achievement Targets / Dependent Variables)
What do you envision your students gaining (performance target) from your ARP?
What improvements do you hope to see in your own teaching practices (process target) as a result of your ARP?
• Changes to academic/skill performance
• Changes in student behavior• Changes in student
attitude/affect
• Changes in your teaching skill
• Changes in your teaching methods• Ex: Providing clearer
explanations• Ex: Proving timely
feedback to learners
11
Make 2 Lists1st - To progress toward your achievement targets, what needs to happen?– List what would have to happen to meet your
targets? • Plan learning activities, • Provide instruction and feedback to students on:
- exercise intensity, - cardiovascular systems, - mechanics of measuring intensity,
• Create assessments • Secure technology, • Learn to use, • Create technology management plan• Teach students how to use technology• ….• ….
These independent variables become your action plan
12
Make 2 Lists2nd - To progress toward your achievement targets, what contextual considerations do you need to account for?
• School Policies• Weather• Number of students per class• Space considerations• Student knowledge / familiarity with technology• Access to technology• Length of class period• ….• ….
These may impact/influence your independent
variables
14
Assessment / Student Learning Tools
A Sample of ideas
15
Fitness Reporting Software
• Human Kinetics Fitnessgram – Secure web-based data base– County or School access– Teacher & Student sign-in– Longitudinal tracking– Student & Parent reports– Class Summary reports
Potential Standards addressed using HRMs 3, 4
Assessment & Evaluation
16
Remember that tools don’t change
learning spaces; Teachers do.

Mr. Peter’s Classroom Rules for Electronics
• In our classroom:– Laptops or tablets, are encouraged. Smartphones may be used
at designated times to update homework or To-Do lists.– You must enter this classroom with all devices off, and leave the
classroom with all devices off– No games, entertainment, or personally communications in the
classroom. EVER.– No taking pictures or videos of others without their permission.– You are accountable for your words and conduct both in class
and online– Computer problems are NEVER an excuse for late or missing
work. Save often. Leave yourself extra time. PROBLEM SOLVE.
