  • 1. UDL: Universal Design Learning provides flexibility in learning various content, so regardless of disabilities, all students can learn. Curriculum should be flexible and adaptable to all learners. Technology can be the vehicle that provides this flexibility. UDL Presentation David Paddock Walden University 3-20-14

2. Flexibility in the Environment Because UDL focuses on flexibility in allowing students to demonstrate what they have learned, UDL curriculum is very adaptable to any classroom environment. In the course video, Dr. Rose compares UDL to architecture. In architecture there is a common language for drawing prints and designing buildings regardless of where the building are being built. UDL follows the same principle, that is, regardless of the environment, the design of the curriculum is the same. 3. Principles of UDL Provide Multiple Means of Representation Perception Language, Expression, Symbols Comprehension Provide Multiple Means ofAction and Expression PhysicalAction Expression and Communication Executive Function Provide Multiple Means of Engagement Recruiting Interest Sustaining effort and persistence Self-regulation Source: http://www.udlcenter.org/aboutudl/udlguidelines 4. Central Role of Technology Technology plays a pivotal role in UDL and should be utilized as much as possible. There are endless assistive technologies that can help students with reading, writing, and language. Technology has the ability to knock down barriers that keep students from learning content. Example: Students who struggle with reading could read the same classroom book on a computer and use a set of head phones. Example: Students who struggle with math could play interactive games that help them and give them more practice. 5. UDLs Impact on Student Learning Goal oriented and meshes nicely with educational standards Flexibility for students to demonstrate they understand the content Adaptable to many different environments, cultures, and languages Helps special education students reach learning goals and learn the curriculum in a mainstream classroom 6. What Brain Research Tells Us About UDL Students stimulate different parts of their brain with different types of learning activities. UDL meshes nicely with different learning styles 7. How Does UDL Support Diversity? UDL focuses on flexibility so that all students can learn regardless of language, culture, or cognitive disabilities. Goal is to teach each individual student, meet their current needs, and use assistive technology to help them learn the content. 8. How Technology Supports What Research Shows About the Brain Technology is a tool that allows students to be fully engaged in the learning process. Brain connections are made through multiple interactions with the same content in different ways. Using technology is a great supportive and assistive tool to stimulate brain function. 9. CAST Online Tools CAST has many great online tools that are available to teachers. Curriculum Barriers Finder:This tools allows all teachers to find barriers to student leaning within their curriculum. TES Journal:This is a great online journal that students can use in any class. Class Profile Maker: this is a tutorial based program that helps teachers identify their students needs. Source:http://www.cast.org/teachingeverystudent/tools/
