A DBMS is best described as a collection of application software (also called package software) that manage the database structure and that control shared access to the data in the database. Current DBMSs also store the relationships between the database components; they also take care of defining the required access paths to those components.

A DBMS is a system also, because it consist of four major components that are identical to computer system .Those components are-

A database is the information to be stored whereas the database management

system is the system used to manage the database. This structure may be

regarded in terms of its hardware implementation, called the physical structure, or this structure may be regarded independently of its hardware implementation, called the logical structure.

In either case, the data structure is regarded as static because a database cannot ‘process anything. The DBMS is regarded as dynamic because it is through the DBMS that all database processing takes place. How the DBMS presents data to the

user is called the view structure.

I think DBMS is a collection of application software that deals with efficient data storage and

access. It is application software because—

It ensures highest proficiency in data management (which is a specific task)

by helping in-

Adding new data, for example adding details of new student.

Deleting unwanted data, for example deleting the details of students

who has Completed course.

Changing existing data, for example modifying the fee paid by the

student

DBMS is not just alone the component that helps in functioning of a program but there are plenty of techniques and commands embedded within that works behind. However DBMS has seen a rapid and drastic change since its inception. Today it comes with plenty of excellent options and choices that offer ease to use it.

Operating system works as an interface to make the DBMS perform and makes sure that the operating of DBMS is smooth.
