Learning to be “CyberSmart”

• The Internet is a collection of computers.

• These computers are all over the world.

• The Internet is used to:– Teach us– Entertain us– Sell things to us– Help us stay in touch with each other

• When we are using the Internet, we are “online.”

• The Internet is a great resource.

• But, it can be a dangerous place, too.

• We want to learn and have fun online but we have to be careful.

• Today we will learn about being “S.M.A.R.T.” while using the Internet. “S.M.A.R.T.” stands for:– Safety– Manners– Advertising– Research– Technology

• But first … what is the Internet?– Computers around the world, connected to other big,

powerful computers called “servers” and to each other

– “Modems” are devices used to connect computers to these servers

– “The Web” is a collection of systems and software that makes the Internet easy to use.

• The Internet is a very BIG place– You can find almost anything– It’s easy to get lost– So, you need an adult around (just like in real life)

• Now, let’s learn about Safety

– What you can say

– What to do when things go wrong

– When and how to make friends

– To visit a far off place?

• You should:– Know how to get there

– Know what you are looking for

– Have an adult with you (or nearby)

• When things go wrong…– You can’t find the website

– Your computer has a problem

– Something unexpected happens

• You should:– Get help from an adult

– Do you know someone is who they say they are? How?

• You should:– Tell an adult about the

people you meet online

– Never go meet someone in person without telling an adult first!

• When You’re Online … Always Remember:– KNOW where you’re going– HAVE an adult nearby to

help– NEVER give out personal

information about you or anyone in your family unless an adult says it’s ok

– BE CAREFUL about who you make friends with online!
