One of Marcel Pagnol’s cherished spot in Marseil le. In his “tri logie

marseil laise”, Marius, the main character was torn bet ween

his beloved one, Fanny, on shore and his love for the sea. And it

appears to be understandable… Restaurants, bars, sunny terraces,

museums and beautiful buildings around the por t will make you

love nothing but the shore. Then, looking at the moored boats, you

will, l ike Marius, feel this uncontrollable feeling you have to sail and

enjoy the sea.

Whether on ear th or sea, you will always find a “marseil lais” to talk

to you about the histor y of the por t: a stor y about fish for sure, but

also love, travel and discoveries.

It feels like the fish market of Marseille has always been there, through centuries it has remained and is still a place where one can buy freshly caught seafood. Every day, let it be rain or shine the fishermen are always there in the morning, near the water line. You can hear some yelling ‘Criée’ which is announcing that their fish is being sold and it is definitely part of the magic of Marseille’s port.

In this store, you will find lot of goods like T-shirts, bags or jewels done by local artists. Every product is manufactured in France and made in limited edition. This shop is an ephemeral one: it is based in Jeunes Anacharsis Street only until December. After that, you will have to go on their website YOU-ART- DIFFERENT.com. to buy their articles. Finally you will always be welcome with happiness by the two owners.

At the beginning, Le chateau d’If was a strategic place to provide the city of Marseille. In the 17th century, it became a prison where famous tale’s characters such as “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “The Iron mask” were imprisoned.. Le Chateau d’If is located in one of the Frioul Islands so you can also enjoy the wild landscape of those Islands. At only 20 minutes by boat from the Vieux Port you can be pleased with the wild landscape, the “calanques” and an unobstructed view of the city.

La Canebière is Marseille’s most famous street, opening directly onto the Old Port (Vieux Port). Its name originates from the Provençal term canébé, meaning “hemp,” and can be traced back to the 11th Century when the street was home to ropemakers and hemp merchants. Its lively hotels, luxury shops, theaters, and cafes earned it an international reputation a bit like the “Champs Elysées” in Paris.

This pleasant brewery welcomes you both in summer and winter when you need to relax after being walking all day long in the streets of Marseille. You’ll be able to benefit from this large and shaded terrace close to the old port both for drinks and enjoy their delicious homemade burgers but also their tapas and many other Mediterranean specialties. Finally, as an help to make you choice easily and avoid you to be lost, their menus are translated in English and Spanish.

If you are looking for an original and typical memory, this shop will completely fit you ! This boutique creates its own tee-shirts so you can personalize yours with any references of Marseille. There are created by a native’s “Marseillais” artiste, so those products are 100% made in Marseille. If you want to bring a personal aspect on these tee- shirts you can ask for a specific image. Furthermore, you can please all your family as all sizes are proposed! You can also find bracelets, bags. A memory shop you can’t avoid !

If you are looking for a very good and sophisticated cuisine “La table du fort” is the right place to be. seasonal food is always suggested on the menu. Not only dishes are very good but aesthetically very interesting. If you are gourmets you will not be disappointed, you can be sure that the gourmets of Marseille know this restaurant. Furthermore, the atmosphere is cozy and the interior design is modern. As regards to the price we can say that it is a real good value for money.

Situated at the entrance of the Vieux-Port on the south bank, Fort Saint-Nicolas was built on the orders of the “Sun King” Louis XIV. Built to watch over the townspeople and to defend the crown against civil unrest or rebellion, the canons were turned on the city. The tower, named Entre casteaux, is now home to the Foreign Legion. The only way to visit the fort is through the Tourist Office which has arranged organised tours.

This place, founded in the 20th century, was the fish wholesale for many years, before becoming the biggest theater in the region. We can read « Criée for fishes » on the entrance of the building. This place, which has been transferred at Port Saumaty in 1976 is a symbolic place of Marseille, especially for its name and architecture. Nowadays, the building hosts The National Theater of Marseille, which has a sitting capacity in excess of 1000 spectators, spread over two auditoriums.

Are you ready to embark sailor? Enter in one of the trendiest bar of the city and be prepared to spend an amazing night. In this surprising pirate boat décor you will be able to enjoy all kinds of beverages, especially their wide range of shots. Try the astonishing blends of taste they offer, enjoy the heavy music and be ready to set fire to the bar figuratively and literally speaking.

Set on the right bank of the old port, the town hall which was built in 1656, is a beautiful example of the civil architecture of the period. The town council has been meeting here since the Middle Ages. Its stately presence is a symbol of power - from both the past and the present. In order to avoid traveling around the port the Ferry-Boat and its captain can take you across the old port in just five minutes for free.

If you are tired of noise and pollution of city like Marseille you can revitalize yourself in La Passerelle. Main characteristic: you will be able to eat amazing products and enjoy a perfect view on the garden. In a family atmosphere here you can enjoy typical Mediterranean dishes, made with seasonal products coming right from the market. So you can be sure the meals are prepared just for you with the best products in Marseille. So don’t hesitate to push the door of this tiny haven of peace, the time to recover and charge your batteries to be ready to face the city again.

Cathédrale dela Major

Between the Vieux Port and the commercial port stands la Cathédrale de la Major, an important symbol of Marseille. Its atypical architecture in the Roman-Byzantin style is similar to that of the Bonne Mère. Built at the end of the XIX century by Léon XIII, it is one of the biggest churches constructed since the middle ages. The inside, mainly in marble, is as astonishing as the outside with its particular stripes.

Now serving the public as a multicultural center it also hosts temporary art exhibitions. The rectangular form of the buildings comprises four wings which open onto a courtyard, of which the centrepiece is a beautiful domed chapel in Italian baroque style.

The vielle charité is also a multidisciplinary centre promoting science and culture, including the Museum of Mediterranean Archeology and the Museum of African, Oceanic, and Amerindian Arts which aims to show elements from different and lost cultures.

The “Bar des 13 Coins” is a central place in the Panier. The “Perroquet Bleu” used to be a famous cabaret before Kad Merad’s brother (the famous French actor) gave it a new lease on life. The last relics of one of the oldest churches in Marseille, this building was built in the 12th Century and altered in the 14th and 17th Centuries. It was destroyed during the French revolution of 1789 for hosting meetings of the sections who were outraged by the convention. Only the bell was saved.

Built in 1593 as a hospital, the Hotel Dieu is one of the em-blematic buildings of Marseille which overlooks the Vieux Port. A real architectural example in the 18thcentury, it was completely renovated during the 19th century. Now it has found a new identity as an outstanding starred hotel as well as a Casino. Situated in the very heart of the city, the house boasts a striking façade of diamond-shaped stones and a beautifully sculptured staircase. Built by a wealthy Marseilles merchant between 1570 and 1576, it is a fine example of 16th Century civil architecture. It was inspired by the palaces of the Renaissance, in particular the Diamond Palace in Ferrare, Italy. Today the building houses a museum dedicated to the old town of Marseille.

Created in 1963, it remains one of the few preserved trading ports in the world. Discovered during the reconstruction of the old port area which was destroyed during World War II, these archeological remains are testimonies to the commercial activity of Marseille, the Phocaean City, in ancient times. For instance, you can see an amphora : the ancient Greek two-handled jar, as well as gold coins.

Even if this address has been well known in the city for a long time, it has made a strong comeback 3 years ago thanks to the young owner as pleasant as his restaurant. This modern “bistro” has a convenient atmosphere, with their Argentinean barbecue, burgers, and various cheeses but also homemade cocktails including the famous mojito. Be tempted by this warm bistro especially if you’re a lady: take advantage of all women-table privileges !

In this charming shop, two young men, who have brought the concept to Marseille, make frozen yo-gurt. Basically it’s a 0% fat ice cream just as deli-cious as regular ice cream. Add to that some fresh fruits, a sweet topping, and you’ll get a tasty des-sert. But the yogurt factory also makes some origi-nal creations with tea, smoothies or fruit juices. For a very special and sweet moment.

Notre Dame Du Mont church

Marché de la Plaine

Built on the ruins of a 6th century sanctuary, this church was a must-visit for all church goers for a longtime before Notre Dame de la Garde attracted all the attention. Nevertheless, this outstanding building remains a place for thinking and meditation. Believers or not, the beauty of the setting will leave you speechless.

Four times a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), showmen invade the Jean Jaurès Square in a popular celebration of Marseille’s authenticity. Whatever you are looking for, you will probably find it here: fruits, vegetables, fresh fish, clothes … The smell of different cultures is all around and you will encounter a lot of refreshing surprises in the alleys of this giant place full of life.

If there is simply one place to be in Marseille, for sure it is the Oogie. More than a simple store, it lives around music, culture, culinary arts and urban fashion. How about a little haircut and a huge burger after a long shopping day? You can do those three without moving from the Oogie, you can even have a drink with your friends and listen to good music every Thursday and Friday night from 8 pm to midnight.

First built as a school for “les Beaux Arts” and as a library, the role of “Le Palais des Arts” has changed over the decades. Today it is home of to the famous “Regards de Provence Foundation,” which shares the best of Mediterranean culture. Whether to see the amazing collection inside or the building outside, you must visit this emblematic place.

« La Friche represents man’s incredible capacity to outsmart the systems which prevent him from speaking ». These words from Philippe Foulquié, the venue’s creator, describe perfectly the spirit of this place. Indeed, La Friche is a hotbed for cultural activities, a very famous place of Marseille. You have to visit its major work place before leaving the city. Check their website for exhibition details and event schedules

The Palais Longchamp has been listed as a historical monument. The palace now holds two magnificent museums. Firstly, the art museum, which collection is made of paintings, sculptures and drawings from XVI to the XIX century. Secondly the museum of natural history, which gathers together many specimens of an-imals, plants, minerals.

The Cookers

This restaurant is specialized in Asian food (nems, sushi, makis) and mixes it with Mediterranean culture like “tapas”. This modern and original restaurant makes wonderful cocktails such as Daiquiris and incredible coffees. The young and talented chef has been rewarded after his participation in an international Mojito competition.

It’s a sunny day in Marseille, and after a long day of visits I decide to try a nice little restaurant in rue Maréchal Fayolle. I enter “the cookers”. The concept is simple: give the opportunity to everyone to taste worked gastronomic food at low prices. Plates are simply astonishing: for example, the tiramisu is presented in a chocolate ball filled with it and a hot coffee sauce that makes your ball blow. The dinner is a real culinary trip; the menu changes every two months to allow the cookers to work on seasonal products, and you can even eat for 13€ every lunch time.

Majestically standing at the end of the Rue Saint Ferréol, this building has been built in 1861 by the architect Martin with a surprising resemblance to the Palazzo Vechio of Florence, its official model. On the impressive façade, you can admire references of Provencal figures. This magnificent monument has been the modest residence of several French presidents or even foreign politicians. The fountains standing in front of the building will be a good way to get refreshed during summer time and the lighting effects illuminate the city during the night.

At the end of Cours Pierre Puget you’ll come across the oldest garden in the city, dating back to the ear-ly 19th Century. Guarding the entrance is a staute of architect Pierre Puget, sculpted by Lombard in 1906. A magnificent view of the harbor can be en-joyed from the top of the hill.

The beautiful stadium was built for the 1938 World Cup. Enlarged for the 1998 World Cup, it is currently the second largest stadium in France being able to hold 60,000 spectators. It is Marseille’s shrine of soccer and of course home to local team Olympique Marseille who celebrated its centenary in 1999.

Designed by Le Corbusier, one of the most famous French architects of the modern movement, this original building is like a vertical village. There are true little streets inside the building with a bakery, hostel and a restaurant. Moreover you can find a swimming pool, an elementary school and a running track on the roof.

This magnificent park on the south of the city was designed by landscape gardener Alphan. Water is a major feature here, with beautiful ponds and lakes throughout. An 18th-century country house stands in the heart of this open space, beautifully completed by a garden “à la française”. Other points of interest include botanical gardens with a rose garden and tropical greenhouse.

Facing the sea, the Palais du Pharo stands on a cliff just beyond the borders of the Vieux Port. This palace built during the 19th century for Napoléon III, is familiar to sailors in the region, as it is seen as a welcoming site for ships returning home. These days it is used as a place for conferences and conventions, but the large garden and the view of the Frioul Islands make it a place to be enjoyed by everyone.

Ouch, that’s a difficult wake-up; my partner and I are hungry. After an outstanding night, I need a perfect meal. I’ve an idea. We decide to enter at “the Baron Perché” and I lead my guest right next to the old wood stove; we order one “terre” brunch. After a short chat, a nice waiter interrupts us quickly with a homemade fruit salad and some juice. That is exactly what I needed. I feel great with a coffee, some toasted breads with maple syrup and jams. But this is not everything; a huge plate full of meats comes to us. My love is fulfilled; I think I will be married soon.

At first it was just a small chapel built in 1218 on the top of the hill which dominates the city. However, over the centuries it has grown to become this huge basilica we admire today. Marseille’s inhabitants call it the “good mother” and believe that she looks after them from this place. The site welcomes millions of people each year from all around the world, some because of their faith and others who simply admire the architecture and the 360 degree views of Marseille it offers. You can admire it from numerous spots around the city but you cannot leave Marseille without climbing this hill and enjoying this impressive place.

It’s a wonderful afternoon on the beach and I’m thirsty. After a long work on my skin tan, there’s nothing better than a fresh beer. I’m in a good mood and choose to walk along the Avenue de la Corse. Some good and lounge electronic music leads me to “The Duke”, beer isn’t expensive and people seem to enjoy their free time. You can even try some rum and homemade cocktails. I’m finally leaving heaven; much happier than when I came in, today was a good day…

This beach, which lies between the Vieux Port and Marseille’s Corniche, is probably one of the most appreciated sites of both locals and tourists. Its proximity to the city center, the conveniences and the view make it one of the most popular spots during the summer. Lockers, toilets and volleyball courts are available. There are also nice bars and restaurants right next to the beach to help you endure the heat.

A real piece of heaven can be seen hidden beneath one of the bridges of the Corniche. The Vallon Des Auffes is a tiny, calm, charming port, with turquoise water and small fishing boats. The site includes several restaurants from a pizzeria to gastronomic food; you can enjoy a delicious meal while the echoes of the splashing waves can be heard under the arches of the bridge. There is a famous link between Marseille and the picturesque city of Cassis; over 20km you can enjoy the limestone cliffs buried in the clear water of the Mediterranean Sea. The area, whose complete surface is 5000 hectares, has been classified as a protected site since 1975 and can be visited only by foot or by boat.

Magic and steep, the Calanques are the favorite place of tourists. While they are difficult to access thanks to narrow paths, the Calanques provide the pleasure of swimming and a stunning view of the area. People who go there have to deserve the beauty of the location: a long walk is required before one reaches the Calanques. Rock climbing is a popular activity throughout the area due to the many cliffs that surround the site.

In the middle of a mind blowing setting of high cliffs, Sugiton’s calanque is made up of two peb-bled beach coves. Opposite, a characteristic rocky islet emerges, named “the rocher du torpilleur” (rock of the torpedo boat) because it looks like a warship.

Sormiou is the widest and most accessible calan-que. At the end of the cove, there is a sandy beach with cottages. You will also find a small port and the famous restaurant “Le Lunch,” where you can eat with your feet in the sea.

It is the most famous, the most spectacular and the most grandiose of the calanques. En Vau is located behind abrupt and jagged white cliffs. A special place for climbing, the sea is incredibly clear and spans the entire palette of blue and green.

It is possible to sail from the Vieux Port to the Calanques, with several circuits of various length. Some go around the Frioul islands and others directly into the Calanques, with a stop for some bathing in the turquoise water. Audio comments are available in several languages for every circuit. Lastly, if you wish to enjoy a cruise alone or with friends, boats can be rented for private parties.

Les Goudes still looks like an undiscovered piece of the world. It is a small fishermen’s village which has kept all of its authenticity. Its name comes from the fact that to reach this area, you must take a road full of bended curves. You can easily find nice bars and restaurants, but don’t be surprised to find huge crowds once the summer arrives: this is one of the most visited places in Marseille.

Town of art, town of history, Aix-en-Provence was built and developed around this dual identity. Even if it typically reflects the spirit of Provence, the town knows how to blend different cultures. It is a city with a human dimension and a preserved heritage that is still open to the world.

The old town : located in the center of Aix-en-Provence, it is composed of the Saint-Sauveur market, the City of the Counts but also a cathedral. It is an elegant and well-kept neighborhood which its inhabitants are very proud of.

Art has clearly left a mark on the city. The famous painter Paul Cezanne, an emblematic figure of what we call “Provence,” was born and lived in Aix-en-Provence. Today, you can see examples of his work in the Cezanne studio or at the Art Museum. Of course, you should see the Cours Mirabeau and have a break in places like the Richelme of Cardeurs square where the sun can be enjoyed throughout the day. In the evening, the city comes alive and you will find some unavoidable places to party like the Mistral. If you want to get the most out

of your stay, you can try the local culinary specialty called the “Calisson.”

The fountains : in the 19th century, many works were built to bring an abundance of water through the town. Today, forty public fountains testify to this need and they are perfectly integrated in its art of living.

cassis

Those who have seen Paris but have not seen Cassis have seen nothing at all. The village of Cassis is the very essence of Provence. A former fishing port 15 minutes south of Marseille, the town is now largely supported by tourism as well as its vineyards.Always friendly and welcoming, you will find many places to eat, take a break, or simply stroll through the labyrinth of streets. Varied meals, from the authentic to the Provencal and the exotic are served in terraces shaded by flowering trees.

If the Creeks and Cap Canaille which made it famous are essential in Cassis, the city itself is worth seeing. Its port, its architecture and its beautiful square as well as its ocher and pink facades reflecting the sun will delight you. Cassis is just a little piece of heaven.

Cap Canaille, 399 meters high, is the highest cliff in France. To reach its peak, only the bravest hikers use marked paths, others will prefer to drive along the winding roads of its crest. The view across the bay of Cassis will be the same, breathtaking!

You will of course find the well known beaches of the city, often over-crowded during the summer. This is without a doubt explained by the beauty of the turquoise water, the fine sand, and the ubiquitous greenery.

estaque

An inspiring influence for painters, thanks to its wonderful landscapes and its legendary light, l’Estaque is an area on the north-west side of Marseille. Cezanne painted “Le Pin à L’Estaque” as a tribute to this sublime, typically Mediterranean nature. With its marina and its beaches, this picturesque village maintains a special atmosphere, stamped with tradition.

Once the summer returns, there are plenty of activities in this former hamlet of fishermen and tile manufacturers. Come here to sit outside at a café or to simply go for a walk on the steep paths of the Calanque.Whatever you do, do not leave without having tried the Chichi-fregi.

Estaque is derived from the Provencal word meaning a cable tie to moor boats to a pious.

Located in the 16th district of Marseille, this area is like a little village where many artists used to come in order to find inspiration or simply to rest.It is an ideal place to get away from daily hassles without leaving the city completely.

This famous liquor was invented in 1932 by Paul Ricard. It is made from many plants including anise which gives it this special smell and taste. Very refreshing when served with ice, it is the favorite drink of people from Marseille for the aperitif.

This soap is famous in the world, it’s still made in the traditional way by some manufacturers in Marseille, and made exclusively from olive and a few other vegetable oils. Although many other products exist today, the therapeutic virtues of this product have prevented it from simply disappearing.
