In this photo, Tyler the creator
wears a crown. Which could be
interpreted as phallic
symbolism and masculinity as
it shows power. It also shows
that he is relevant within the
music scene, as crowns are
associated with leadership. At
the same time, it also matches
the colour scheme of the
magazine, creating aesthetic
appeal.
This quote is both bold
and comedic, Meaning
that it draws the reader
in. The usage of the
word ‘sh*t’ is clever as
it stands out amongst
other words due to its
crude nature. It also
gives a sense of anti
establishment, which
may appeal readers.
The headline is bold
and immediately
displays the artist,
which draws in fans,
and makes them want
to buy the magazine in
order to read about
him.
Since NME is a well recognised title,
they can afford to let the image
slightly overlap the title, which is
attractive, and is something that only
the best of magazines can do, which
could be a connotation for superiority
within the music scene.
The word ‘anarchy’ is used as it goes along with the anti-establishment theme of the magazine. This is called specialist vocabulary and is used to get the attention of people interested in a certain scene.
Classic ‘Q’ Title draws in the reader, and uses the rock genre colours of red and white, which demonstrates to any rock fans, that this is the magazine they want to buy.
Use of alliteration ‘punk pig out’ is catchy and flows, drawing the reader in. The word ‘punk’ is also one which connotes the style of magazine, meaning that the readers will appreciate the use of the word.
Another example of a word which readers will be attracted to. Furthermore the usage of the exclamation mark at the end makes the reader feel exited.
The lead guitarist and band leader is taken in a superior shot (slightly low angle), connotating his leadership and allowing his face to be the main attraction of the magazine, which works well at drawing in audience as he is the most recognised member of the band. The medium close-up means that his facial features can be seen clearly, which helps attract the attention of fans.
Bold Headline immediately attracts Muse fans. And white contrasts the background allowing the headline to be more visible.
The space background could be represented as a connotation for an ‘out of this world’ magazine, or suggest that the band are space themed, which muse do happen to base their music around.
Displaying the main features of this week’s issue, and advertising the contents from a glance at the cover.
The cover title is in a blue colour, rather than the standard red. This could be a way of enticing the reader as is adds value and makes the issue feel special. The light blue colour could also represent the theme, or an artist within the issue.
This listing method allows a lot of information about the issue to be displayed in a very small space, and without the reader having to even open the magazine. This makes people more likely to want the magazine if they see the name on an artist who they like.
Amy Winehouse's tattoos are clearly shown off in this picture, as tattoos are associated with rebellion, they connote the ‘sex, drugs, rock’ lifestyle which the magazine pushes for. By doing this the magazine achieves the desired image and attracts readers who are interested that lifestyle.
Amy Winehouse is representing the male gaze in this picture, primarily due to her posture and outfit. She wears a low cut dress exposing her cleavage, which is a well know part of the male gaze. The way she is looking at the camera could be interpreted as provocative. These techniques using the male gaze draw male viewers in as she becomes a sexualised feature of the magazine.
The colour used for the headline matches the colour used in the title, which is aesthetically pleasing and makes the cover stick to the 4 main colour rule.
The usage of a white background may be a connotation for the use of drugs which Amy is known for, and in this case adds to the anarchistic and rebellious theme which the magazine bases itself around. It also means that everything on the cover looks more bold and makes the image stand out
This small quote is at a canted angle, which could suggest that there is something strange or different about it, which goes along with the general anarchistic theme.
