Conventions of music videos what is typical of music videos
Andrew Goodwin’s theory
For example: a video of a stage performance is typical for a metal video, a dance routine is typical for a boy/girl group and women in bikinis by a pool with sports cars in a rap video.
Music videos can also link to film genres, this is known as intertextuality.
For example, many heavy rock songs are influenced by horror films.
1. Music videos more often than not tend to include a demonstration of typical genre characteristics
The notion of looking includes men or women being portrayed seductively or if there is eye contact with the camera. The notion of looking can also be referenced by the use of props.
For example, mirrors, TV screens, cameras, telescopes and magnifying glasses are all references too, these are commonly used.
2. There are frequent references to the notion of looking and voyeuristic t treatment of the female body.
For example, either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting can be seen in killer/papa was a rolling by George Michael.
3. There is a succinct relationship between music and visuals.
For example, an example of a visual style could be Lady Gaga as she is always wearing quirky clothes.
The “4th wall” is broken near always when the video is a performance. This is direct address and seems like they are singing to the audience.
4. The record label which the artist is assigned to tends to have certain demands. They often include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist will have a visual style which recurs across their work.
Audiences enjoy knowing the ‘in joke’
For example, Destiny’s Child doing Independent Women referencing Charlie's Angels and also Will Smith doing Men in Black for the film Men in Black.
Intertextuality in The Wombats video for My Circuitboard City referencing a video game.
5. There is often intertectual references (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc.)
• Artists are clothed in fashionable, stylish and mainstream outfits.
• Artists are portrayed as happy, enjoying their time and content with life.

• Music genre is normally conveyed through the video dressing and setting.
• Pop magazines are often themed with bright and bold coloured which are normally associated with positive vibe.
• Pop is that the song usually is between 3-5 minutes long with a set structure and a consistent beat.
Conventions of pop music videos
• Another convention of Pop music is that within the music industry it tends to follow current trend rather than being independent and making something new, unique and different to hear.
• The form the song normally follows a verse-chorus-verse structure and uses hook lines which are catchy therefore stays in the audiences mind.
• Pop music promotion is via radio stations and magazines. In the UK Pop songs are guaranteed to be heard everyday on well known radio stations.
Conventions
• The songs usually include beats that are very dance orientated, therefore dancing is usually featured within a Pop music video.
• They stereotypically include people in their teens as many people in their youth enjoy parting and clubbing and dancing, which is exactly what the purpose of pop music is for.
• A lot of the imagery create is based on partying as this is stereotypically what teenagers enjoy.
