Conventions of a thriller
By Caitlin Parchment
Some Thrillers
Titles
Sometimes the credits are shown over a black background.
It really depends on the type of thriller but a good example is ‘When a Stranger Calls’, the titles are done in a ghostly font.
The production company name, actor’s names, the title of the film, more actor’s names if needed, casting by, music by, costumes by, edited by, produced by and directed by.
Mise en scene
This really depends on the type of thriller.
For example in the opening of se7en, the psychological thriller, they use x-rays, photographs and text from books.
For a crime thriller you may see knives or guns.
For an action thriller you may see fast cars and gadgets (e.g. the remake of Italian Job).
Camera Shots + Angles
Lots of close up shots are used to show the person’s reaction and facial expression.
Point of view shots, as though someone is watching.
Camera Movement
Panning movements to draw your attention to person or object. For example in ‘When a Stranger Calls’ the camera starts off outside of someone’s house but pans out from it to show the wider scene, but then pans back to house to suggest that this main focus of attention.
Tracking movements are used to help create the feeling of motion and speed and the show the characters that the audience should be interested in watching.
Jerky movements are used to help create the impression of panic and tension.
Sound
Complete silence often puts the audience on edge expecting something sudden to happen.
Haunting music that sets the mood and creates tension
Sound effects for example a telephone ringing, a loud bang or a knock at the door, the sound of glass breaking.
Edgy music which builds tension and sets the mood.
Frantic music, normally associated with somebody running away or being pursued by something or someone.
What you would expect from a thriller
For an action thriller you would expect a fast paced storyline, a central character and a explosive finale (e.g. the Bourne ultimatum).
For a crime thriller you would expect an interesting plot, a central villain and a good guy, a number of twists and turns throughout the films with the good guy coming out on top at the end (e.g. the taking of Pelham 123).
For a sci-fi thriller you would expect a strong storyline with a number of special effects and good wins over evils in the end (e.g. I Am Legend).
For a psychological thriller you would expect to be sitting on the edge of your seat, waiting for something to happen to a vulnerable person and even though you have anticipate it still makes you jump.
