Biotechnology is a process of using microbiology and another biological agent to make various product required by humans.

Biotechnology that uses microorganism for producing alcohol, acetic acid, sugar, or foodstuff, like tempe, tape, oncom, and soyouce.

Microorganism that can change foodstuff Process that helped by microorganism,

for example with fermentation . The result such as tempe, tape, soyouce, and the others also cheese and yoghurt. The process considered as past biotechnology.

Typical that seen in the conventional biotechnology is the direct use of living things and not yet know the using enzim.

Along with the development of science, experts have started again to develop biotechnology by utilizing scientific principles through research.

In the modern biotechnology people attempt can produce products effectively and efficiently.

Modern biotechnology is biotechnology that based on manipulation or DNA engineering, besides utilizing basic microbiology and biochemistry.

biotechnology is not only used in the food industry but has covered many fields, such as genetic engineering, pollution management, the creation of an energy source, and so forth.

With the variety of research and development of science and technology, the greater the benefits of biotechnology for the days to come.

1. Tissue Culture

Is an activity to cultivate a tissue of plant or animal vegetively to be a plant or animal that has similar property to its parent in a short time.Tissue culture is based on titopotency property.Titopotency property in plants is very high. Therefore, tissue culture is commonly done in plants.

Four phases of tissue culture:

Cultivation in culture

Organogenesis

Enlargement or development of product

Cultivation in soil

The adventage of tissue culture:

1. Obtaining a lot of germs in a short time with similar property to the parrent

2. Making plants with properties we want

3. Tissue culture is economical from aspect of time, space, and energy

The steps of Tissue Culture:

1. Preaparing growth medium

2. Sterilizing growth medium

3. Preaparing tissue

4. Cultivating tissue in liquid growth medium

5. Cultivating challus in solid growth medium

6. Moving plant whose root bud and leaf bud have geown to another solid growth medium

7. Cultivating plant in pot containing soil

8. Cultivating plant in actual land

2. Cross Mirriage

Cross mirrage is the simplest and easiest method to get superior variety because we just marry two individuals of the same kind but having different varietes.

The example of cross mirriage in plants is IR-24 (PB-24) riceplant its rice is delicious and soft, more resistant to disease, and can be harvested at the age about 120 days, it can be harvested at the age between 100-105 days.

Besides plants, cross mirriage to obtain superior variety is also done in animals. For example non pure-bred chicken, egg layers, leghron chicken, balinese cow, beat cow, dairy cow, and so on.

Cross mirriage is one reproducttive technology that easiest and practically done. But, not all plants and animals can be cross-mirriage to get superior variety.

3. Artificial Insemination

Artificial insemination is a reproductive technology through generative reproduction.This technique is commonly done in cattle, such us in cows, buffalos, and goats.

The procedure of artificial insemination:

Collecting sperm and put into the artificial insemination device.

Before insemination device is put in, check the position of uterus

The insemination device is put into vagina of female animal

Artificial has saveral advantages, one of them is that the sperm from animal that is required can be freezed. On the contrary, the sperm can be liquified before beingused. Besides , artificial insemination can help cattle breeder to get superior animal withoutsumoning its father.

4. Cloning

Cloning is reproductive technology to produce new individual vegetatively (asexual), so this new individual has property equal to its host.1938, cloning was for the first time proposed by a cerman scientist, hans spemman. He made theory, that animals could be cloned through fusion of embryo with ovum. Cloning can happen in plant , animal, also in human. The simple example of cloning in plant is slipping process in plants. Cloning in animal for example is Dolly. While, the example of cloning in human is “Louise Brown”, Louise brown was the first baby born in England through in vitro fertilization. The statement of David Rovilk in his book “ In the Image: The Cloning of a Man” had triggered debates all over the world about ethics of cloning.

Hidroponic is a cultivation method without soil medium. Hidroponic system in Indonesia began to be noticed by society and developed in 1980. Hidroponic develops from water culture, that is cultivition method of plant in labolatory. Plants is cultivation in nutrient solution or solid thing such as quariz sand that is give nutrient solution.
