CONSTRUCTION OF MISE EN
SCENE
In this presentation I will explaining how I constructed my Mise en scene in key
scenes in my film and why I constructed it in that way.
MISE EN SCENE
Mise en scene is everything that can be viewed on screen and
within a scene, it can range from the lighting used in the film,
costumes, acting, music, composition of shots and the props used.
The Mise en scene helps the audience to have a better
understanding about what is happening in the film and the different
things that happen within a particular genre.
Composition – For scene 1 I
decided that I am going to use a
close up shot on the photos, in
order to translate to my audience
how happy Rachel felt in the past
and how this differs to what she
feels like now.
Costume– Rachel is dressed in a red and
black shirt. The red connotes passion but
also the anger and frustration she is
feeling. The black however will help to
connote the depression and sad mood
that is present throughout the scene. This
costume will help my audience to relate
and sympathise with how Rachel is feeling
Music– The music that I will use in the
beginning of the scene is a melancholic piano
piece that begins off slow and slowly fades
into the scene. This helps to create an
atmosphere of nostalgia within Rachel and
amongst the audience as she remembers the
happy memories, the music will continue into
the flashback scene.
Acting– The actress Heather who plays
Rachel will speak a voice over in the
beginning and during the whole film.
The voice over will be spoken slowly
and solemnly. Heather’s acting will be
low key and not over dramatic, she will
help to portray Heather’s depression
and sadness very subtly adding to the
teen drama genre.
Props– The props used in this
scene is the photos and the photo
frames. Each photo shows Rachel,
and her two friends doing
something silly or smiling and
laughing together helping to
connote the strength of their
friendship and how close and
content they were.
Composition – For scene 2 I will
frame the scene so that it looks
like Rachel is filming the scene of
her and her friends so that she can
keep a memory of their happy
times. The camera will be placed
on a bench with the slide and park
in the frame, it will be a wide shot
of the park.
Acting – For scene 2. I would like
my actresses to play their
characters as over the top and
quite exaggerated to emphasise the
euphoric mood they are all in and
how grateful they are to be
together helping to connote to the
audience the contrast between
Rachel then and Rachel now.
Lighting– On the day to film this
scene. I will make sure that the
weather forecast will be bright and
sunny, so that the scene will include
natural sunny light. The natural
sunny light will help to connote the
peaceful and excited atmosphere
that Rachel is experiencing with her
friends.
Composition – For the final
scene I used a lot of close up’s to
emphasise the tension in the
scene and the element of the
unknown. The last shot in the
scene will be a close up of
Rachel’s hand with the empty
tablet packet in it. This will be
done to show that she is dead.
Acting – The acting in the final scene will be very
dramatic and I would have the actress playing
Rachel's mom to be very scared and fearful when
speaking to show she is anxious to find out what
happened to her daughter. I will have my actress
close to tears when she first discovers Rachel’s body
and then she goes into hysterics once she realises she
is dead.
Lighting – The lighting that will
be used will be artificial and not
natural. In the beginning of the
scene the corridor will be darkly lit
to highlight the element of
mystery.
Props– In this scene the only
prop that I have used is an empty
pill packet. The pill packet will
symbolise Rachel’s need to deal
with her pregnancy in a different
way and not having the willpower
not to deal with the issue.
Music – The music used in this
scene will be very eerie and
mysterious to add to the element
of the unknown of what has
happened to Rachel.
