DESCRIPTION
Jim Hildyard presents his case study about using QR codes with local science museum, Magna
Citation preview
This Project linked students from Winterhill School with the Magna Science Adventure Centre.
These Rotherham locations have close links, being only a couple of miles apart.
We wanted to explore the potential of QR Tags. We had a vision whereby students could visit the attraction, be inspired by the exhibits, then create digital artefacts which could be viewed by visitors at a later time on mobile devices.
We started with visits. Eighty students aged twelve to fifteen went to Magna to explore the different themed zones.
They took photographs, recorded sounds, filmed and drew inspiration from the exhibits.
They were told that any creative work that they made, would be available to future Magna visitors through QR tags and mobile devices.
When the students returned to their classrooms, they worked with a digital art specialist, an English teacher, a music teacher and a former steel worker to forge their own interpretations of the exhibits and make new works inspired by the place.
We then made these various artefacts available to visitors through QR tags and mobile technology.
It was a pilot and is still ongoing. The body of work is still growing.
