TYPES OF NETW ORK

PERSONAL AREA NETWORK
(PAN)

This network is usedfor communication am--ong computers close one person within rangeof 20-30 feet. This networkmay be wired with computerbuses or wireless network through bluetooth.

LOCAL AREA NETWORK
(LAN)

It is a digital communicationsystem, which enablesinterconnecting a large numberof computers and other peri--pheral devices .This is used in small areas such as office or lab.The configuration of LAN can be astar, ring or a multi point network.

CAMPUS AREA NETWORK
(CAN)

This network connects two or more LAN s that is limited to a specific geographical area viz. College campus, office building.It is generally limited to an areabetween Local Area Network andMetropolitan Area Network.

METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK
(MAN)

This network connects two or more Local areaNetwork or Campus AreaNetwork together. Itprefers routers, switchesand hubs but doesn't extendthe boundaries of town/cities.

WIDE AREA NETWORK
(WAN)

A WAN is a digital communication system, which interconnects a large number of computers in wide area. This type of communication may bedeveloped to operate world wide.In a WAN, the transmission mediumused can be telephone lines, microwaveand satellite links etc. The ARPANET is an example of WAN.
