ABACUS

•500 BC the Abacus or the suan pan was the first mechanical computing device which are used by the Chinese.

•The Abacus was used as an ancient calculator. It helped businesses to perform mathematical calculations without using pen and paper

•Made up of rods of sliding beads mounted on a frame.•Considered as the first computer.

Napier’s Bones

•1550 – The Napier’s Bones was developed by John Napier. •John Napier – known as the discoverer of logarithms.

Slide Rule

•1600 also known as slipstick•Invented by William Oughtred.

•It is used primarily for multiplication and division, and also for scientific functions.

PASCALINE

•1642•Invented by Blaise Pascal•Also called as numerical wheel calculator

•Could add, subtract and handle numbers up to 999,999.999

LEIBNIZ CALCULATOR

•1673 • (also called as the Step Reckoner)•Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz•Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

JACQUARD’S LOOM

•1804 •Joseph Marie Jacquard•Simplifies the process of manufacturing textile fabrics

ARITHMOMETER

•1820•Charles Xavier Thomas de Colmar•A machine capable of performing the four basic math operations

in a simple and reliable way.•First digital mechanical calculator

DIFFERENCE ENGINE

•1822•Invented by Charles Babbage•British Mathematician/inventor

•Can perform calculations and print results.•Babbage spent ten years working on the difference engine,

•But in the end, he was forced to abandon it because of lack of funds.

ANALYTICAL ENGINE

•1833•Invented by Charles Babbage/ •Lady Ada Augusta Byron•Known as the first lady computer programmer

•Can solve Mathematical Problems and Store information

•1884• Invented by Herman Hollerith •the machine was developed to help process data for the U.S. Census
