2. Compassion The feeling that arises in witnessing anotherssuffering and that motivates a subsequent desireto help. Goetz et al. (2010) Being moved by anothers suffering andwanting to help. Lazurus (1991) Feeling sorrow or concern for others along witha desire to alleviate their suffering. Steller etal. (2011) 3. How We Define Compassion Compassion the unconditional empathy for someones suffering, consequently leading towards a desire to alleviate that suffering. Two Components: 1) Empathy 2) Alleviate Suffering Behaviors 4. Why must empathy occur before the action to Alleviate anothersSuffering? If the one person is expressing behaviors that alleviate someone elsessuffering WITHOUT FIRST expressing empathy, then this behavior isbeing acted out of Altruism. 5. Empathy vs. Altruism Altruism Unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others, consequently leading to an action to improve the welfare ofothers. More of a Social Desirability Component Compassion the action of being aware of, being sensitive to and vicariouslyexperiencing the feelings and thoughts of another, consequentlyleading to an action to alleviate someones suffering. 6.
