#2THE ENCHANTED

ALTERNATE WORLD

Page 16: Comparison between Coraline and Alice in The Wonderland

THE ENCHANTED ALTERNATE WORLDS

Both characters go through a hole to get to the opposite world or wonderland.

In Alice in Wonderland, the rabbit hole is merely the doorway into Wonderland. Alice falls down, leaving the normal realm behind.

Coraline has it’s own version. It is literally a door that leads to the Other World.

They are the entry ways to their darkest childhood wishes, filled with awe and mysteries, as well as danger.

Page 17: Comparison between Coraline and Alice in The Wonderland

Coraline discovers a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own but, in many ways, is better. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other try to keep her there forever. Coraline must use all her resources and bravery to make it back to her own family and life.

In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the rabbit hole is the place where it all begins. It's Alice's unthinking decision to follow the White Rabbit that leads to all of her adventures.  The tunnel itself leads to the Hall of Doors.

#3ANIMAL SIDEKICK

Page 20: Comparison between Coraline and Alice in The Wonderland

Animal Sidekick Cats play important characters in both stories. Coraline has one cat (known as The Cat), whereas Alice has two

(the pet Dinah, and the infamous Cheshire Cat). Both cats can speak and they engage the protagonists in

conversation. They are the messengers, the ones who warn and lead the heroines into their wonderlands, and then back out.

The cats are similar in their personas and the relationships. Both cats have a tendency to appear and vanish at will.

In both imaginary worlds, the cats are the closest things Alice and Coraline have to friends.

Page 21: Comparison between Coraline and Alice in The Wonderland

Coraline’s neighbor’s cat accompanies her on journey into the other world and offers important bits of advice along the way. Indeed, Coraline manages to escape the Other Mother by throwing the cat at her. In the end, the Black Cat really becomes Coraline's friend and companion. He moves in with Coraline once they return to the real world.

Page 24: Comparison between Coraline and Alice in The Wonderland

The Other Mother (also known as The Beldam) is the main antagonist character. She is the demonic ruler of the Other World who disguises herself as her victim's mother and generally acts warm and open minded towards them. The Other Mother satisfies her victim's needs by offering them everything they need which they cannot afford in the real world.

The Queen of Hearts is a hot-and-cold, though very sinister character. She is certainly the villain of Wonderland, and most of the creatures fear her greatly. She is the one who controls the laws, and is portrayed as irritable, manipulative, and villainous.

The Happy Ending

In all of the stories, the adventure takes place outside of reality, yet the return to reality is met with a feeling of relief.

The danger and insanity have passed. Each heroine has defeated her specific

foe.
