Comparatives and superlatives

We use comparatives to compare 2 things:Emily is tall. Angela is taller.

There are two main types of comparative adjectives:

Short adjectives Long adjectives

1 syllable adjectives :

Tall → tallerLong → longerFast → faster

2 syllable adjectives

ending in –yPretty →prettier Happy → happier

Adjectives with 2 or more

syllables:

Boring → more boring Intelligent → more intelligent

There are some irregular comparativesGood → Better Bad → Worse Pepperoni pizza is better than

vegetable pizza My book is worse than your

book

When we use comparatives we use the conjunction “than”Peter is older than Mary Films are more interesting

than documentaries

We use superlatives to compare 3 or more things:Emily and Angela are tall.

Angela is the tallest.
