Community Radio as a knowledge toolin responding to climate changeunder the Nairobi work program under UNFCCCAs a knowledge tool, community radio offers benefits in the following

ways in Bangladesh inline with Adaptation, Technology Transfer &

Finance/Budget

Speaking to communities in local dialect using terms and

phrases that are easily understood;

Providing two-way interactive social learning through

listening clubs, call-in shows, and other forms of exchange;

Enabling the communication and exchange of knowledge

between people who need it, e.g. rural farmers, in a consumable,

deployable and non-threatening way; 9

Communicating local knowledge, needs and demands

beyond the community to inform policy, research, and other

communities;

Providing the only media available to communities that have

little or no access to other methods of conveying information

and knowledge;

Bringing together people from frequently disconnected

stakeholder groups such as livelihoods, community leaders,

organizations and governance.

Weather and rural livelihoods: Community Radio Contents

Expenditure increases :

as changes in weather force higher spending on

cultivation:

Hot temperatures and drought force them to use

more expensive fertilisers, irrigation in the

summer and, in some cases, drought resistant

seeds.

Incomes decrease

as changes in weather destroy crops:

Lack of rain causes crops to die,Hail crushes crops , Rain

falling at unpredictable times means crops don’t ripen,

Unpredictable rainfall ruins crops just before harvest

Colder weather creates heavy dew in the morning, which

ruins the crop Increased salination of soil killing crops and

fruit trees

Decrease in food production

means people are more vulnerable to price

hikes as they are reliant on bought food:
