Common Communicable Diseases
Chicken Pox
• Contagious disease caused by a virus varicella zoster• This virus can live in the body for almost two weeks
before you get sick• Consists of small red swelling on the skin which is
usually painful and itchy
Symptoms
• Rashes and itch on the skin• Fever and headache• Sick feeling• Vomiting• Painful ears and sore throat
What to do:
• Get vaccinated• Keep away from others• Avoid scratching the blisters because it can cause
scars
2. Tuberculosis (TB)
• An airborne contagious desease caused by bacteria that penetrate the respiratory tract
• Can be transmitted from person to person through small droplets of saliva which carries the bacteria
• Can also spread in the atmosphere
Symptoms• Weakness• Fever• Night sweats• Weight loss• Extreme tiredness• Aches and chills• Cough with phlegm containing small amount of blood• Chest pains on strenuous activities
Prevention
• Do not smoke• Do not use the utensils used by the patient• Eat lots of fruits and green leafy vegetables
3. Mumps
• A contagious disease caused by a virus in which the salivary gland in the neck swells up
• Most children age 5 to 9 are the ones usually affected by this disease
• May cause impotence in men
Symptoms
• Mild fever• Chills• Sore throat • Feeling sick• Swelling on the neck
Prevention
• Vaccination
4. Measles
• A contagious viral disease that can be identified usually by the rashes all over the body
• People who have serious measles usually recover for about 2 weeks
Symptoms
• Sneezing and runny nose• Fever• Red spot all over the body• Eyes are sensitive to light
Prevention
• Vaccination• Stay away from the patient
Flu
• Short term for influenza• Widespread viral disease which usually occurs
during cold weather.
Symptoms
• Chills • Headache• Fever• Sore throat• Runny nose• Dry cough• Muscle pain
What to do
• Wash your hands before you eat • Use tissue paper/hanky when you sneeze• Drink plenty of juice and water• Consult a doctor
