I live with my parents and my dog in a town

called Santa Cruz, very near to the city of A Coruña, in the North-West of Spain.

Who I am?

Hello!My name is Sara and I’m 14 years old.

Who I am?

One of my hobbies is hanging out with my friends and I also like surfing, travelling to other countries, read books, chatting with my friends on the internet… I listen to music everyday music

and I love it, especially pop and rock music.

Galicia: The region where I live

Galicia is a Spanish region with almost 3 million citizens situated in the North-West of Spain and north of Portugal. It has its own government and parliament.

In Galicia, everyone speaks Spanish, but it also have their own language called Galician.

Santiago de Compostela

Santiago is the capital of Galicia.For centuries Catholics were

pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela.

Today many people made “El camino de Santiago" walking or cycling and is a tourist and religious route.

The Cathedral of Santiago is one of the best known monuments of Europe and the most representative of Galicia.

A Coruña.

At about 8 km from my town is the center of city of A Coruna.This city has about 250,000 citizens and has an airport, a football stadium called “Riazor”, shopping malls, cinemas, a port ( with tankers, cruise ships and sport boats), a Symphony Orchestra, museums, etc …

The most important monument in the city is “La Torre de Hercules" which last year was declared World Heritage Site.

It is the oldest lighthouse in the world operating

Oleiros

Oleiros is my council.It has 44km2 where the sea

is the main character.It has approximately 33,000

citizens.This council has about

917.700m2 of parkland.Oleiros and A Coruña are

only separated by the sea and linked by a bridge.

History of Oleiros

The municipality of Oleiros existed since 1835 and until this year belonged to the Jurisdiction of Miraflores.

The name “Oleiros” comes from the word “ola" and in English would mean something like "clay pot" handmade by

the potters.

Oleiros

Oleiros has over 90 small villages but the most important are:

• Perillo-Santa Cristina• Oleiros• Santa Cruz• Mera• Lorbé • Dexo

This council has about 917.700m2 of parkland.

Natural environment

The landscape and natural wealth is the most important feature of Oleiros.

It has over 20 km of coastline. There are beautiful cliffs and forests from Mera to Lorbé and there are protected and is called “Dexo’s natural coast”

In Mera there are some beautiful beaches, a small lake, a lighhouse and an eduacion environmental center of the coast .

In Santa Cruz there are a castle witch is also an environmental education center with many exibitions during

the year , some beaches , parks, a port...

Cristina is one of the best known of Oleiros. 50 years ago was surrounded by dunes and pine trees. All this was broke down to make buildings. Even the hotel was built above the sand. Today all that remains is the beach.

Tourism

Oleiros has several hotels and campsites for people who visit us.

Historically Oleiros was a fishing and agricultural town.

Today, tourism and the environmental quality are among the main sources of wealth.

Economy

Fishing and agriculture have been replaced by other jobs.

Currently, there are other sectors that employ citizens Oleiros:

Primary sector: 3%

Industry and construction: 24%

Service sector: 73%

In the port of Lorbé aquaculture and fisheries are very important.

In this port there fishing boats and is the site of the most important mussel production in Galicia.

Oleiros has grown from 10,000 people in 1970 to 40,000 today. So the construction is very important, since they have built many homes and many public works like schools, sports centers, hospitals, etc..

Oleiros has excellent education and health services. There are also trade and several cafes, restaurants and hotels.

Recently,was opened a mall in Oleiros.

SportsIf you come to Oleiros don’t

forget the sports clothes.If you like the sea you can go sailing, canoeing, rowing, surfing, swimming...

If you like team sports you can play football, basketball ... in our halls and sports courts. If you like skateboarding you can do it in the skate park in Bastiagueiro.Come and get in shape!

Culture

In Oleiros we have a music and dance school to learn to play all the instruments. We also have a band, 3 theaters and 8 municipal libraries.

Architecture The church of Santa Maria de

Dexo (XII century, Romanesque style) is our historic monument more representative.

The “Pazo de Xaz” is a model of civil architecture of the XVI century. Is a Galician house with large gardens.

FestivitiesIn Oleiros we celebrate

traditional festivals like in the rest of Spain.The most popular are:

-Christmas (December 25): religious festiva that is celebrated with the family and children receive gifts.

- Los Reyes Magos (January 6): a celebration of Catholic tradition in which 3 kings give gifts to the children.

Festivities Carnival (February or March): for a week a lot of people dress up,sing and dance in the streets.

Local Festivals in summer: During the summer in every village are between 1 and 4 days of partying with friends and family meals. In the night there are a lot of music with orchestras and the village people dancing.

Education

In Oleiros are schools in all levels, from kindergarten up to university:

• 4 schools from kindergartens and elementary schools.

• 3 high schools• 1 vocational training center.• 1 university center for

advanced studies in physical education.

Maria Casares • My institute is named

Maria Casares in honor of the actress with that name.

• Maria Casares (1922-1996) lived in exile in France throughout his life and was a legendary film and stage actress.

• His father, Santiago Casares Quiroga, had been minister of the republic and lived in Oleiros.

In this institute you can study the following educational levels:

-Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO): 4 academic courses for students from 12 to 16 years.

- Baccalaureate: 2 academic preparation for college for students aged 16 to 18.

- Electricity Training Cycles for students over 16 years .

INSTALLATIONSThe school has a

classroom for every student groups, but there are specialized rooms, equipped with electronic whiteboards, for some subjects such as:

- Music Classroom- Workshop technology- Computer rooms- Sports Center- Classroom of arts-Assembly hall.

It also has a small cantine to buy food and some sports areas to use at the breaks (2 of 20 minutes each).
