Intro

Colour theme is very important to the main product because it sets the tone and theme for our groups’ music video. Equally setting complementary theme with our website and digipak will help the viewer recognise an established theme and a strong link between each design. In order to represent youth, energy and passion correctly in our product I decided to research similar artists who aimed for theme as well as different male bands to see what they have produced in their albums.

We primarily decided that we will incorporate the colours Blue for Logan, Red for Kendall and Yellow for Iyaz for each member possibly on a white background but decided to explore colour representation.

Bright colours

Colours are a significant part of indication for a brand and can have a major impact in how the band’s brand is viewed by society. It goes without saying that our theme for the band will incorporate mainly bright colours because they represent life and youth and fashion, it also suggests the type of culture one is from and what they like. Red indicates charisma, power, courage and passion

Black indicates power, mystery, elegance and sophistication

Yellow indicates Optimism, Beauty, and Energy

Green indicates life, protection, nature and ambition

Blue indicates, security, stability, trust, confidence and courage

Colours preference by gender

Colour preference, in regards to the viewer’s gender has been researched by professionals yielding interesting results. Female’s favourite colour in the data gathered shows that around 35% of females prefer blue and 23% like purple.

However the males recorded have a stronger interest in blue as 57% say it is their favourite colour whilst the 2nd favourite colour among the males, Green at 14%.

There is also strong evidence which suggests that females prefer soft style colours while males prefer strong saturated colours with no tint. As our band is made up of boys and our audience will towards the opposite gender, I recommend that our group uses soft colours to accurately capture our target audience.

Existing products comparisons

To get an accurate understanding of the uses of colour in musical products and band brands I decided to research some similar artists to see what they produced for their digipak colours and to see whether or not they complemented their website.

Red

In this album cover we can see that the various members of the wanted are split into 5 different tiles which capture a close up of their faces while a group photo would fail to do so because it’d have to fit them all in the image. Additionally the red complements the various close up’s as it illustrates their charisma and charm.

Black

In this digipak for Jessie J we can see that her digipak uses dark colours contrasting with a white background which suggests purity to advertise her album. While viewers may think it is rather basic it sends a powerful message contrasting innocence with mystery and elegance.

This is complements her website which acts as a powerful contrast to the Jessie J’s website because it instead uses the black as a background rather than using black as the font.

Blue

The use of blue in Lana Del Rey’s album digipak signifies clarity and beauty of life. This is aided by title “born to die” which suggests she’s come to terms of her purpose in life.
