Background - Population

Victorian Government’s Melbourne 2030 Strategy:• 5 M population for Melbourne by 2030• 26 Principle Activity Centres (PAC) identified• Coburg identified as a PAC

Large amount of infill development expected:• 4,000 plus new residential dwellings• 65,000 m2 of commercial/retail floor space• 1400 new permanent jobs plus 10,000 temporary jobs during

construction• $900M worth of investment in local economy

Background – Stormwater

Increased urbanisation resulting in more stormwater runoff Further environmental degradation to waterways• Nutrient loading• Increased sedimentation

Run off capable (in many cases) to supply incremental increase in demand

Background (Continued)

New paradigm created:• Harnessing alternative water supplies• Sustainable principles• Long term environmental benefits

Council now pushing developers to apply ESD principles:• Focus on reducing potable consumption

Outcome - Stormwater harvesting

YVW Coburg Proposal

Harvest stormwater from two existing drains (MW and Council) which run along the boundary of the proposed site

Treat the stormwater to a very high recycled water standard

Reticulate the recycled water to:• All new houses/apartments within a designated

area for toilet flushing, laundry and outdoor uses• Nearby public open spaces for irrigation

Project Benefits

213 ML/year of potable water substituted

Much better stormwater quality than is currently the case:• Stormwater is currently untreated• Nitrogen – 22 % reduction• Phosphorous – 42 % reduction• Reduced sediment loading

Reduced urban run off to Merri Creek – 21 %

Recycled water available for open space irrigation
