In classical mathematics, analytic geometry, also known
as coordinate geometry, or Cartesian geometry, is the study of geometry using a
coordinate system. Analytic geometry is widely
used in physics and engineering, and is the foundation of most
modern fields of geometry, including algebraic, differential, and computational geometry.
The best example of coordinates in
everyday life is use of longitude and latitude on globe. Each unique location on the earth
has a unique combination of longitude and
latitude. Global positioning system used by radio taxi
operators also uses x,y coordinates to find
exact location of a vehicle.

The basis of co-ordinate geometry were founded by René Descartes in 1637 and were published under the book ’Discourse on the Method’. It included applications of algebra to geometry, giving a push to the use of geometry to solve some algebraic problems.
The basic aim behind discovery of the basis of a coordinate system
was to plot curves and find solutions to algebraic equation.
What is it used for?

The Cartesian Plane
Elements of a
Cartesian plane
Y-axis
X-axisOrigin(0,0)
Negative directions
Positive directions
Each reference line
is called a coordinate
axis ; the point
where they meet is
its origin
The Cartesian plane consists of two fixed
perpendicular directed
lines, measured in the same
unit of length
The horizontal directed line is
called the x-axis and the vertical
directed line is called the y-axis.
The Coordinate Axes Divide The Plane Into
Four Parts Called Quadrants.
1st Quadrant(+,+)
2nd Quadrant(-,+)
3rd Quadrant(-,-)
4th Quadrant(+,-)
The distance of a point from the y - axis is called
its X-coordinate, or Abscissa, and the
distance of the point from the x-axis is called its Y-
coordinate, or Ordinate.
(2,-8) X-coordinate- 2 Y-coordinate- -8
The coordinates are written in an ordered pair. Abscissca (say x) and the ordinate (say
y) as (x,y).If x ≠ y, then (x, y) ≠
(y, x), and (x, y) = (y, x), If x
= y.
