WHO IS A CIVIL ENGINEER ?
A civil engineer is a creative people who come up with lots of ideas and have the power to turn them into real things for people.
“Civil engineers have been shaping our cities for centuries, helping develop the new and protect the old”
WHAT IS CIVIL ENGINEERING ?Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline which deals with the construction, design and maintenance of physical and natural built environment. It includes the works like: construction of bridges, roads, dams, canals and buildings.
SUB-DISCIPLINES OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
Below are some important sub-disciplines of civil engineering:
❏Environmental Engineering
❏Water source Engineering
❏Coastal Engineering
❏Structural Engineering
❏Earthquake Engineering
❏Material Engineering
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERINGIt is the branch of engineering that deals with nature. It is a combination of science and engineering principles that leads to refined natural environment.
WATER SOURCE ENGINEERINGWater source engineering is concerned with the management and collection of water. It is a combination of hydrology, geology, resource management and conservation. Water resource engineering relates to the management of quantity and quality of water in both above ground and underground resources.
COASTAL ENGINEERING
This branch of engineering tackles the problems of erosion and flooding.
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
Structural engineering is related with the structural design and structural analysis of building (towers and bridges). It considers stiffness, strength and stability of the structures.
EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING
This is further a sub part of structural engineering. Earthquake engineering deals with all natural disasters. Earthquake engineers design and construct the structures in such a way that no earthquake can destroy them.
MATERIAL ENGINEERING
Material Engineering is one of the important branches of civil engineering. It studies the fundamental properties and characteristics of various materials. As the name suggests, it deals with various kinds of materials such as metals, concrete and asphalt concrete and the attention is drawn to the strength of aluminium, polymers, steels and carbon fibers.
SOME COMMON CAUSES OF ENGINEERING FAILURE
1. Extreme events (Loma Prieta Earthquake - 1989)
2. Unknown phenomena (Tacoma Narrows Bridge - 1940)
3. Design flaws (Hartford Civic Center - 1978)
4. All of the above
SOME RECENT DISASTERS
1. World Trade Center -2001
2. Northeast Blackout - 2003
3. Tsunami - 2004
4. Hurricane Katrina - 2005
TOP TEN IMPRESSIVE CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECTSThere are numerous extraordinary engineering projects that have been established and completed. But the top ten among them are:
1. Great Pyramid of Giza2. Great Wall of China3. Aqueduct of Segovia4. Brooklyn Bridge5. Panama Canal6. Hoover Dam7. Golden Gate Bridge8. English Channel Tunnel9. Burj Khalifa10. Qingdao Haiwan Bridge
