Civic Sense
The term civic sense is composed of two words. “Civic” and
“Sense”. Civic means city or town, and the word sense
means awareness about something so we can say :
Understanding of the structure, formation and ingredients
of a society along with the responsibility of a citizen is
known civic sense.

Man as a Social Animal
“Man is a social animal by nature”. To fulfill his needs, herequires a group of human beings around him. No one cansurvive in isolation as suggested by Aristotle “an individualwho is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is eitherbeneath our notice or more than human. Society issomething that precedes the individual. Anyone who eithercannot lead the common life or is so self-sufficient as not toneed to, and therefore does not partake of society, is eithera beast or a god”.
8
What is a Society?
The term "society" came from the Latinword societas, which was derived fromthe noun socius used to describe a bondor interaction between parties that arefriendly.A society is a body of individuals outlinedby the bounds of functionalinterdependence, possibly comprisingcharacteristics such as national or culturalidentity, social solidarity and language.

Population of Pakistan is 180 million (literacy rate 57 %).Unfortunately, it is observed that we are lacking civic sense. Most commonly seen example is, people try to expose thingsby using techniques like name calling, taunting and mud-slinging, which arises feelings of disgrace in a person who isbeing addressed. So it is assumed that as a nation, we areruled more by our emotions than our sense.

Civic Sense in Pakistan
Why we are lacking civic sense?
This attitude is prevalent across all sections of oursociety. People today are so driven towards theirpersonal goals that civic sense as an ethic hasbecome a low priority, almost a nuisance.
Civic sense is all about social ethics. It isconsideration by the people for the unspoken normsof society. A lot of people assume that civic sense isjust about keeping the roads, streets and publicproperty clean. But civic sense is more than that. Ithas to do with law-abiding, respect for fellow menand maintaining decorum in public places.
11
What is being observed as a common practice?
Vandalism, intolerance, racism, road rage, etc., are allexamples of lack of civic sense. People are becomingless and less tolerant of each other, of other’s cultures, backgrounds, and other similar traits. Civic sense is theneed of the hour.
12
Redefining Civic Sense?
Civic sense is all about having
consideration for a fellow human being
while living in a civilized society like :
• Being polite
• Showing consideration to the elderly, women, children and disabled people
• Driving in one’s lane without honking
• Throwing one’s garbage in dustbins
• Smoking only at designated places.
18
Good manners and civic sense
Good manners are extremely important
in life, at home, Schools, Colleges,
Universities and at workplaces. Without
manners people in this world would not
be able to communicate effectively with
anyone. Manners are usually instilled in
a child at an early age.
19
Social Ethics and Civic Sense
Social ethics encompass a code of
conduct created by a society in order to
ensure a smooth functioning of a society.
Fol is an example of ethics in our society

• When going into someone’s house, we have to knock on
the door and greet or ask for permission. The goal of course is
to respect the privacy of host.
• An uninformed/casual visit should not be at night. The
purpose is not to disturb those who are resting at night.
What Influences Social Ethics?
Our values, beliefs, norms and culture determine our social
ethics. Certain behaviors or moral principles have universal
appeal and people are expected to posses them while
interacting with fellow human beings. .i.e. lying may be
considered a vice not only on an individual basis but can be
applied to people of different societies in their interaction with
others at various levels.
