• Filler is the tobacco that makes up the heart of the cigar & gives it its bulk. It is the source of rich flavors and aromas

• The three leaves used to make the filler comes from the Criollo Plant taken at different levels of the plant

– Ligero-the top most part of the plant, provides strength

– Seco- the middle part of the plant, provides aroma

– Volado - the bottom part of the plant, provides combustibility

The Binder

• Binder is the tobacco leaf that holds the filler in place. It defines the shape of the cigar and the smoking quality.

• The Binder comes from the Criollo Plant, grown in direct Sunlight. Leaves are much coarser and darker.

• Matured for 12 months before use.

Handling and Presentation

• A cigar display is like jewellery — One should capture the imagination of the customer by displaying a range of cigars with beauty in a humidor

• Brush the cigars as it always improves the appearance of the cigars and removes the Bloom and Dust

• Remove one cigar from the top layer of cigar Box to avoid damage in leaf, in case tightly packed

• Offer the customer the open box to appreciate the aroma of the cigar.• The connoisseur should normally be asked to point the cigar of his/her choice

rather than be permitted to shuffle them around, which risks damage to the stock

• Offer the Connoisseur the cigar in sufficient light

HABANOS CIGARS TRAINING MANUAL

Instructions for storing cigars in Humidors

• Cigars should be stored at optimum temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Centigrade & Relative Humidity of 75% to 80%

• The humidor should be looked after carefully and the condition of the cigars within the Humidor should be checked regularly

• The moisture source is the Oasis located inside the cigar tray. When necessary this should be removed and damped with Distilled or Himalayan water for about 10 seconds, then kept face upwards until the surface water is absorbed, wiped dry and replaced

• Do not use Tap water for wetting the moisture source for the cigars. The regularity with which you need to perform this task will vary with the weather, but the surest guide is the cigars themselves. In general this should be done everyday

• It is essential that one member of staff is made responsible for the humidor. He or she must inspect it each day, not only to check condition but also to ensure that the humidor is filled with cigars

• Nothing destroys a sale faster than presenting the humidor with a display of dry, unraveled, over humidified or infected cigars

Page 22: Cigars 20 manual

HABANOS CIGARS TRAINING MANUAL

Cigar Storage

Why do we need to store cigars in temperature of 16 to 18C & Relative Humidity of 75% to 80%?

Because……• Cuba is located very near the Tropic of Cancer with relative

humidity at 79% and temperature of 25C, hence the cigars are best stored in the specified conditions for them to retain their freshness.

Test for checking cigar condition • The cigars should be firm and springy to be in

perfect condition to check the same hold the cigar between your thumb and index finger and squeeze gently.

• In case the cigars are hard and brittle, drying out then it is time to wet the pad

Instructions for storage of cigars in the Glass Top Humidor

3.For The Ceramic InteriorsDampen a clean sponge with distilled water and wipe the cedar wood interior or the humidor. Place the damp sponge in an open plastic bag inside the humidor, close the lid and keep it closed for two hours allowing the cedar interiors of the humidor to ‘Breathe’ the humidity from the sponge and the humidorAfter 12 hours remove the sponge and the plastic bag and refill the special foam again to its capacity. Close the humidor for an additional 12 hours after which it will be ready for storing the finest cigars. The humidity level at this point should be 70%. If it is less repeat the process

1.For The HygrometerRecommended adjustment initially and once a year. Simply wrap it up in a wet cloth for ½ hour. The pointer should indicate 94–98%. If this does not happen adjust the instrument from the back with a small standard screwdriver so that the pointer indicates 94–98% approximately

2.For The Ceramic HumidifierFill a tray with distilled water. Place the ceramic humidifier submerged in the water with about one fourth above water. After 5 minutes of soaking install it back into the space provided in the humidor

4.Check the Hygrometer from time to time and when needed repeat the process of saturation of the adsorbent material as and when required according to Part 2 of this instruction to maintain the humidity level at around 70%

Natural Blemishes

Natural Blemishes sometimes found on the Wrapper Leaf

BloomMay appear on the outside of the cigars, as they are a constantly breathing product. Simply brush it off and put them back on sale

Green PatchesAre formed when a patch of dew remains on the leaf during the air curing process, preventing oxidization whereby the leaf assumes a golden brown color

White SpotsAre formed when there is a tiny gap in the Muslin Cloth which covers the Corojo plants in the field, and the sun penetrates through onto the dew covered leaf, scorching a tiny white mark

• A cigar should be lit with a butane gas lighter or an ordinary long matchstick.

• The authentic way of lighting a cigar is to place a candle in the trolley that has the humidor, light the cedar lining then carry out the complete ceremony of Lighting a Habano….

Story of

The Cigar Band

Page 36: Cigars 20 manual

HABANOS CIGARS TRAINING MANUAL

• It is customary for a cigar to have a cigar band, although few cigars brands do not have them.

• The cigar band appeared as a novelty item in the 19th century, so that aristocratic gentlemen, who enjoyed the pleasure of smoking, could hold the cigar without staining the gloves customarily worn at the time.

• The bands then were subsequently used to highlight and distinguish the cigar brand.

• These bands have now become more sophisticated and true works of art as well as collection pieces.

• Arising from the mistake of calling these bands “vitolas” came the term “vitophilia”, denoting both the hobby of collecting cigar bands and box trimmings.

Cigar Band

Page 37: Cigars 20 manual

HABANOS CIGARS TRAINING MANUAL

Never remove the band from the cigar since it is tightly secured & its removal

might damage the wrapper.

In case the guest wishes to remove the band, suggest he smokes 3/4th of the

cigar for it to become soft for removal without damaging the wrapper.
