Academic Vocabulary

Continuing EducationClasses or training to learn new skills or to stay certified and knowledgeable of current information in a specific profession.

PENSION PLAN:A REGULAR PAYMENT MADE DURING A PERSON'S RETIREMENT FROM AN INVESTMENT FUND TO WHICH THAT PERSON AND/OR THEIR EMPLOYER HAS CONTRIBUTED DURING THEIR WORKING LIFE.

Transferable Skills

The skills you've gathered through various jobs, volunteer work, hobbies, sports, or other life experiences that can be used in your next job or new career.

Volunteering at KC Pet Project gave me the opportunity to plan a fundraiser. I was involved in all aspects of the social media marketing. (This experience would be a great example of a transferable skill.)

ResignationA formal statement or document, stating thatone gives upan office, position, job etc...

Colleagues:A fellow member of a profession, staff, or academic faculty; an associate.

The professor’s colleagues started a scholarship in his name after he died.

Nonpartisan:not partisan;especially free from party affiliation, bias, or designation. Unbiased decision making

or choices.For the country to move forward it will take a non-partisan effort. This means both political parties must work together.

Information Technology: the technology involving the development, maintenance, and use of computer systems, software, and networks for the processing and distribution of data

Every large company has an information technology department.

Teamwork: work done by several associates with

each doing a part but all subordinating

personal prominence to the

efficiency of the whole. Working

together to achieve a common goal.

Winning the state championship took a great deal of teamwork!

Collaborate: to work jointly with

others or together especially in an

intellectual endeavor.

My boss asked my colleagues to collaborate on the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The goal is to raise $20,000.

Philanthropy: altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement, usually manifested by donations of money, property, or work to needy persons, by endowment of institutions of learning and hospitals, and by generosity to other socially useful purposes. The United Way is a philanthropic organization.

If you donate money to a charity or volunteer to help people in need, you can call your good deeds philanthropy.

Diversity: the condition of being diverse. Non-likeness between people or things. People of different backgrounds, cultures, ideas, or belief systems.

There are more than 50 languages spoken in the North Kansas City school district. This diversity allows for students to appreciate other cultures!
