Christmas in South Africa
Annamaria KyriakouΓ1Σχολ. Έτος 2013-2014
Because South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas comes in the summer. So there's lots of sun and beautiful flowers in
full bloom.Schools are closed for the Christmas holidays
and some people like going camping.
CAROLS In the cities and towns carolers make their
rounds on Christmas Eve. Church services are held on Christmas morning. Christmas Eve celebrations in larger centers include "Carols by Candlelight" and special screen and floor shows.
TRADITIONAL FOODMany South Africans have a Christmas
dinner in the open-air. For many more, it is the traditional dinner of either turkey, roast beef, mince pies, or suckling pig, yellow rice with raisins, vegetables, and plum pudding, crackers, paper hats and a traditional South
African dessert called Malva Pudding (sometimes also called Lekker Pudding).
DECORATIONSHomes are decorated with pine branches, and
they all have the decorated Christmas fir (tree) in a corner, with presents for the
children around. At bedtime on Christmas Eve, children may also hang up their
stockings for presents from Father Christmas.
CELEBRATIONSOn Christmas day afternoon,
people visit family and friends or might go on a
trip to the country side to play games or have a swim.Boxing Day is also a public holiday in South Africa and again people like to be 'out and about' having a good time! It falls on December
26 and is a day of real relaxation.
