China is a huge country in Asia. It covers more than 3.7 million square miles. To the north of China is Mongolia and Russia. Label 1 on your map Mongolia. Label 2 on your map Russia. China is separated from Mongolia by the Gobi Desert. The Mongols lived in the Gobi desert, and were often at war with China. This is why the Chinese built the Great Wall of China, as protection against the Mongols. China is bordered in the east by the Pacific Ocean. Label 3 on your map Pacific Ocean. The large island off the coast of China is Taiwan. Label 4 on your map Taiwan. The water between China and Taiwan is known as the Taiwan Strait. A strait is a narrow passage of water. Label 5 Taiwan Strait. There are also two smaller countries to the northeast of China. They are North Korea and South Korea. Label 6 North Korea and 7 South Korea. On the west and south, China is surrounded by many smaller countries. You will recognize India in the lower left corner. Label 8 India. Between India and China is Nepal, where Mount Everest is located. Label 9 Nepal. To the west, China makes contact with many Middle Eastern countries. The largest one at the northwestern side of China is Kazakstan. Label 10 Kazakstan. Beneath Kazakstan are two smaller nations, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Label 11 Kyrgyzstan and 12 Tajikistan. China also borders Pakistan. Label 13 Pakistan. Afghanistan is located between Tajikistan and Pakistan. You can see its eastern border on the left side of the map. Label 14 Afghanistan. To the south of China are several nations. Next to Nepal is Bhutan. Label 15 Bhutan. Between China and the sea stretches Myanmar, which used to be called Burma. Label 16 Myanmar.
