Technology Integration Rationale

Our five senses allow us to appreciate the wonders of life. It is important for children to become aware of the beauty and purpose of their eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin. Students will make new discoveries using sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. With the help of technology, learning about our senses can be fun and interactive!

Internet Content

• The websites mentioned throughout this presentation provide reliable information related to teaching and the five senses.

• The links to the sites used can be found either on the actual slides or in the notes section.

Content from YouTube

“The All of Our Senses Club” is a clip from Sesame Street that can be easily accessed on YouTube! This clip is wonderful because it has children just like them discussing what the senses are to them! This is fun and relatable for children. There is also a fun song about the senses featured at the end of this clip that the children can learn and sing themselves! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWULkZPDREE&feature=player_detailpage

Internet Podcasts

http://rhianan-wikispace.wikispaces.com/Podcast+Lesson+Over+The+Five+Senses

This Podcast is a fun science lesson discussing the different parts of the body and the five senses. The target audience is kindergarten. Podcasts are wonderful because students can have access to such information at any time and any place as long as they have access to a computer, ipod, ipadetc!

Internet Resource

National Science Teachers Association(click link to access site)

• NSTA is the largest organization in the world. NSTA mission is “...to promote excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all.”

• The Science & Children Magazine (as shown on the right) is “now available to NSTA members in a digital version. Now NSTA members can read it on the computer as well as the Kindle Fire, Android tablet/phone, and Apple devices.”

Internet Resource

National Geographic Kids (clink link to access site)

• National Geographic Society is responsible for creating educational programs and resources for schools, out-of-school settings, and the home.

• This site has useful categories with resources for teachers, students and kids!

• I also loved this site because it has an option for members of the community including schools to get involved!

Internet Resource

Scholastic (click link to access site) Scholastic’s Mission:

“The corporate mission of Scholastic is to encourage the intellectual and personal growth of all children, beginning with

literacy, the cornerstone of all learning. With more than 90 years of experience supporting the learning lives of

children, today Scholastic remains committed to providing quality, engaging educational content in digital and print

formats for the next generation of learners, and the families and educators who guide them.”

• There is an option to check out the Scholastic Channel on Youtube and internet blog or to follow Scholastic on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter!

Kidspiration Diagram

The students can fill out their very own diagram! I will prompt the students with a “scene” such as a snowy field or a sunny day at the beach. The students will then be able to collaborate and share ideas with one another to fill in the boxes describing what they might see, taste, smell, hear, and touch.

Teaching Materials

This game can be played as a class using the SmartBoard! It is a fun and engaging game in which students will get to specifically exercise one of their five senses – sound!

Teaching Materials

• This app, Senses-LAZ Reader, is designed for either an iPhone or an iPad.

• Children can read this short story with vibrant illustrations

• Provides age-appropriate discussion questions at the end to get children thinking!

Teaching Materials

Teachers can use this interactive game on the SmartBoard where students must determine the correct sense to answer the question.

Teaching Materials

• The inclusion of a “Five Senses Picture Sort” center to the classroom. This can either be purchased or easily made by the teacher.

• This idea was inspired by the blog Keeping Up With The Kindergartners(click to follow link)

Subject-Specific Resource

Uses of the Internet

• Teachers Pay Teachers (click link) This site allows teachers to browse by grade level, subject, and type of resource. It provides helpful resources such as worksheets, SmartBoardactivities, projects, lesson ideas and much more!

• Howard Hughes Medical Institute“Seeing, Heart, and Smelling The World” is a section of this sophisticated site which has an abundance of informative and insightful articles such as “The Mystery of Smell” or “The Value of Having Two Ears.” These articles discuss the senses at a deeper level and provide interesting facts that perhaps the teacher can relay to his or her students at a more age-appropriate level!

Web 2.0

Because this is Kindergarten, I would recommend using Twiducate for teachers to maintain a simple

and easy connection with parents! Parents can then assist their children on this site. This social

networking site is a free and safe place for schools!
