The Looting of America How Wall Street’s Game of Fantasy Finance Destroyed Our Jobs, Pensions, and Prosperity, and What We Can Do About It Les Leopold Pub Date 6/2/09 $14.95, $19.50 CAN • paper 978-1-60358-205-6 5 3/8 x 8 3/8 • 224 pages Politics & Social Justice World Rights Not a Wall Street insider? A guide to the economic crisis for the rest of us. How could the best and brightest in finance crash the global economy and then get us to bail them out? What caused this mess? And what can Main Street do about it?

In The Looting of America, Les Leopold debunks the prevailing myths that blame low-income homebuyers, credit-card debtors, and government interference. Instead, readers will discover how Wall Street undermined itself and the rest of the economy by playing and losing a highly lucrative and dangerous game of fantasy finance. He also asks some tough questions:

Why did Americans let the gap between workers’ and executives’ pay grow so large? Why did we fail to realize that the excess money in those executives’ pockets was fueling casino-

style investment schemes? Why did we buy the notion that financial products that no one could even understand would

somehow form the backbone of America’s new economy? And how can we get our money back and never give it away to gamblers again?

In this page-turning, plain-speaking narrative, Leopold tells us how everyone from individual investors to school districts to institutions around the world fell victim to Wall Street’s “innovative” financial products--like collateralized debt obligations, better known as CDOs, which sucked trillions of dollars from the global economy when they failed. As the country teeters on the brink of a depression, he warns, we should be especially wary of advice from the so-called financial experts who got us here, and then conveniently got themselves out. So far, it appears they’ve won the battle, but The Looting of America refuses to let them write the history—or plan its aftermath. Les Leopold cofounded and currently directs two nonprofit organizations, the Labor Institute and the Public Health Institute, and is the author of the award-winning The Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor: The Life and Times of Tony Mazzocchi. Leopold designs research and educational programs on occupational safety and health, the environment, and economics and helped form an alliance between the United Steel Workers Union and the Sierra Club. He attended Oberlin College and Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Marijuana Is Safer So Why Are We Driving People to Drink? Paul Armentano and Mason Tvert Pub Date 9/15/09 $14.95, $19.50 CAN • paper 978-1-60358-144-8 5 3/8 x 8 3/8 • 192 pages Politics & Social Justice World Rights Evidence shows marijuana is safer than alcohol. Yet alcohol is legal and marijuana is not. Has the time come for some citizen-led sanity? Nationally recognized marijuana-policy experts Mason Tvert and Paul Armentano compare and contrast the relative harms and legal status of the two most popular recreational substances in the world—marijuana and alcohol. Through an objective examination of the two drugs and the laws and social practices that steer people toward alcohol, the book poses a simple yet rarely considered question: Why do we punish adults who make the rational, safer choice to use marijuana instead of alcohol? Marijuana Is Safer reaches for a broad audience. For those unfamiliar with marijuana, it provides an introduction to the plant and its effects on the user, and debunks some of the government’s most frequently cited marijuana myths. For current and aspiring advocates of marijuana-law reform, as well as anyone else who is interested in what is becoming a major political battle, the authors spell out why the message that marijuana is safer than alcohol must be a prominent part of the public debate over legalization. Most importantly, for the millions of Americans who want to help advance the cause of marijuana-policy reform—or simply want to defend their own personal “safer” choice—this book supplies the talking points and detailed information needed to make persuasive arguments to friends, family, coworkers, and elected officials. Written in a reader-friendly style, but loaded with facts and insightful analysis about the “war on marijuana” and the drive to end it, Marijuana Is Safer is the perfect book for anyone who has—or has not yet—ever wondered, “Why are we driving people to drink?” Mason Tvert is the cofounder and executive director of Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER). He appears frequently in the news and travels the country promoting the “Marijuana is Safer” message. He resides in Denver, where he serves on the city’s Marijuana Policy Review Panel. Paul Armentano, deputy director of NORML (The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and the NORML Foundation, is a recognized expert in marijuana policy, health, and pharmacology. He appears regularly on Drew Pinsky’s nationally syndicated radio show and his work has appeared in over 500 publications. Armentano is the 2008 recipient of the Project Censored Real News Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism. He currently lives in California with his wife and son.

The Raw Milk Revolution Behind America's Emerging Battle Over Food Rights David Gumpert Pub Date 11/17/09 $19.95, $25.95 CAN • paper 978-1-60358-219-3 6 x 9 • 288 pages Food & Health World English Rights How the fight over raw milk is changing the way Americans think about food-borne illness, chronic disease, and government regulation of what we eat and drink. Beginning in 2006, the agriculture departments of several large states—with federal backing —launched a crackdown on small dairies producing raw milk. Replete with undercover agents, sting operations, surprise raids, questionable test-lab results, mysterious illnesses, propaganda blitzes, and grand jury investigations, the crackdown was designed to disrupt the supply of unpasteurized milk to growing legions of consumers demanding healthier and more flavorful food. The Raw Milk Revolution takes readers behind the scenes of the government’s tough and occasionally brutal intimidation tactics, as seen through the eyes of milk producers, government regulators, scientists, prosecutors, and consumers. It is a disturbing story involving marginally legal police tactics and investigation techniques, with young children used as political pawns in a highly charged atmosphere of fear and retribution. Are regulators’ claims that raw milk poses a public health threat legitimate? That turns out to be a matter of considerable debate. The Raw Milk Revolution reveals that the government’s campaign--ostensibly designed to protect consumers from pathogens like salmonella, E. coli 0157:H7, and listeria--was based in a number of cases on suspect laboratory findings and illnesses that could well have had other causes, including pasteurized milk. David Gumpert dares to ask whether regulators have the public’s interest in mind or the economic interests of dairy conglomerates. He assesses how the government’s anti–raw-milk campaign fits into a troublesome pattern of expanding government efforts to sanitize the food supply—despite rises in asthma, diabetes, and allergies. The Raw Milk Revolution provides an unsettling view of the future, in which nutritionally dense foods may be available largely through underground channels. David E. Gumpert is a journalist who specializes in covering the intersection of health and business. His popular blog, www.thecompletepatient.com, has chronicled the increasingly unsettling battles over raw milk. He has authored or coauthored seven books on various aspects of entrepreneurship and business and previously been a reporter and editor with the Wall Street Journal, Inc. magazine, and the Harvard Business Review.

Death & Sex Tyler Volk Dorion Sagan Pub Date 10/13/09 $25.00, $32.50 CAN • hardcover 978-1-60358-143-1 5 1/4 x 8 • 224 pages Science & Sciencewriters World Rights Two books under one cover deliver a brief, incisive, and entertaining romp through the science of sex and death. On DEATH . . . What does death have to do with life? In his short, intriguing look at how and why things die, Tyler Volk explains that death is not simply the end of life. Rather, it is an essential step in natural selection that has long powered evolutionary design. Volk weaves the science of living and dying in a deft narrative that illustrates how life uses death for more adaptive living. In fact, death has been an exquisite, ever-shifting part of the grand evolutionary story---from life’s simple beginnings nearly four billion years ago to the evolved human culture and consciousness of today; from the simplicity of bacteria to the complexity of human psychology. Death reveals the connections between life and death, not as opposites, not even as complements. Volk illuminates death as an organ of life—rather like wings or fingers, mating behaviors, or thoughts. . . . and SEX In Sex, Dorion Sagan takes a delightful, irreverent, and informative romp through the science, philosophy, and literature of humanity’s most obsessive subject. Have you ever wondered what the promiscuous behaviors of chimpanzees and the sexual bullying of gorillas tell us about ourselves? Why we lost our hair? What amoebas have to do with desire? Linking evolutionary biology to popular culture, Sex touches on a potpourri of topics ranging from animal genitalia to sperm competition, jealousy’s status as an aphrodisiac and the origins of language, Casanova and music, ovulation and clothes, mother-in-law jokes and alpha females, love and loneliness. A brief, wonderfully entertaining, highly literate foray into the origins and evolution of sex. Two books in one cover, Death & Sex unravel and answer some of life’s most fundamental questions. Dorion Sagan is author of numerous articles and twenty-three books translated into eleven languages, including Notes from the Holocene: A Brief History of the Future and Into the Cool, coauthored with Eric D. Schneider. His writings have appeared in the New York Times, the New York Times Book Review, Wired, Smithsonian, The Ecologist, Natural History, and numerous other publications. Tyler Volk is head of the science track in New York University’s environmental studies program and a professor of biology, with a research emphasis on the global carbon cycle. Volk’s previous books include CO2 Rising: The World’s Biggest Environmental Conundrum; Metapatterns: Across Space, Time, and Mind; and Gaia’s Body: Toward a Physiology of Earth.

Waiting on a Train The Embattled Future of Passenger Rail Service James McCommons Foreword by James Howard Kunstler Pub Date 11/17/09 $17.95, $23.50 CAN • paper 978-1-60358-064-9 6 x 9 • 272 pages Nature & Environment World Rights The Embattled Future of Passenger Trains Will America ever get passenger rail back on track? During the tumultuous year of 2008—when gas prices reached $4 a gallon, Amtrak set ridership records, and a commuter train collided with a freight train in California—journalist James McCommons spent a year on America’s trains, talking to the people who ride and work the rails throughout much of the Amtrak system. Organized around these rail journeys, Waiting on a Train is equal parts travel narrative, personal memoir, and investigative journalism. Readers meet the historians, railroad executives, transportation officials, politicians, government regulators, railroad lobbyists, and passenger-rail advocates who are rallying around a simple question: Why has the greatest railroad nation in the world turned its back on the very form of transportation that made modern life and mobility possible? Distrust of railroads in the nineteenth century, overregulation in the twentieth, and heavy government subsidies for airports and roads have left the country with a skeletal intercity passenger-rail system. Amtrak has endured for decades, and yet failed to prosper owing to a lack of political and financial support and an uneasy relationship with the big, remaining railroads. While riding the rails, McCommons explores how the country may move passenger rail forward in America—and what role government should play in creating and funding mass-transportation systems. Against the backdrop of the nation’s stimulus program, he explores what it will take to build high-speed trains and transportation networks, and when the promise of rail will be realized in America. James McCommons has been a journalist for more than twenty-five years and published hundreds of articles in magazines and major newspapers. A former senior editor at Organic Gardening magazine, he specializes in ecology and travel writing. He grew up in a railroad family and has spent thirty-five years riding trains in America. He currently teaches journalism and nature writing at Northern Michigan University in the Upper Peninsula.

New in the Chelsea Green Guides series, Food: How to Buy Right and Spend Less helps the average shopper navigate the choices, whether strolling the aisles of a modern supermarket or foraging at a local farmers market. This down-to-earth, casual guide—small enough to be slipped into your pocket—answers these and other questions for the shopper:

What are the differences among organic, local, fair-trade, free-range, naturally raised, and biodynamic foods?

How affordable is it to subscribe to a CSA farm—and what are the advantages? Is it better to choose wild Alaskan salmon at $18.99, or the Chilean farmed fish at

$11.99? What cooking oils can be sustainably sourced? How can a food co-op increase access to, and affordability of, healthier, Earth-friendly

The People v. Bush One Lawyer’s Quixotic Campaign to Bring the President to Justice and the Grassroots Movement She Encountered along the Way Charlotte Dennett Foreword by Vincent Bugliosi Pub Date 9/15/09 $14.95, $19.50 CAN • paper 978-1-60358-209-4 5 3/8 x 8 3/8 • 192 pages Politics & Social Justice World Rights When journalist-turned-lawyer Charlotte Dennett became outraged that Bush White House officials were acting above the law, she did something that surprised even herself. She ran for a state attorney general seat on a platform to prosecute George W. Bush for murder. She lost the race, but found a movement—one that continues its quest to hold leaders accountable to U.S. law and preserve a Constitutional presidency. In The People v. Bush, Dennett recounts her seminal effort to prosecute the former president, introduces readers to a world where the actions of a few can indeed empower the many, and reports on the current state of the movement to hold Bush accountable for high crimes and misdemeanors. Dennett’s wild ride through politics began when she read in The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder, by lawyer Vincent Bugliosi, that a state attorney general could prosecute George W. Bush—should one take up the cause. Soon after, Dennett launched her attorney-general race in Vermont, signed up Bugliosi as her special prosecutor in the event that she won, and together the two made headlines across Vermont and the nation. Dennett’s book also explores the tenacity of other Vermonters who launched grassroots campaigns to prosecute or impeach Bush, as well as Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, who proposed the 9/11 Truth Commission. With these stories and her own, Dennett shows that it’s not just possible but necessary to hold higher-ups responsible for heinous acts—not out of revenge, but to preserve justice. Charlotte Dennett, author and attorney, specializes in civil rights litigation and family law and represents injured parties in negligence, medical malpractice, and wrongful death cases. She’s been a reporter in the Middle East and is the coauthor with her husband, Gerard Colby, of Thy Will Be Done—The Conquest of the Amazon: Nelson Rockefeller and Evangelism in the Age of Oil. She and her husband live in Cambridge, Vermont.

For the homeowner or community organizer, the essential guide to harnessing clean and safe wind energy.

Wind Energy Basics, Second Edition

A Guide to Home- and Community-Scale Wind-Energy Systems Paul Gipe

In terms of its potential effects on the world’s economies, environment, and advancement of peace, the availability of clean, renewable power is without question going to be the defining challenge and goal of the 21st century, and wind will lead the way. Internationally acclaimed wind energy expert Paul Gipe is as soberly critical of past energy mistakes as he is convincingly optimistic about the future. At a time when the overwhelming challenge of transforming our world from one of fossil carbon to one of clean power seems daunting at best—and paralyzingly impractical at worst—Wind Energy Basics offers a solution. Wind power can realistically not only replace the lion’s share of oil-, coal-, and natural-gas-fired electrical plants in the U.S. but also add enough extra power capacity to allow for most of the cars in the nation to run on electricity. Gipe explains why such a startlingly straightforward solution would be cost-effective and implementable in the near term, and have the capacity to resuscitate small and regional economies. Wind Energy Basics offers a how-to for home-based wind applications, including detailed lists of which wind turbines to choose (for every type of installation, from small cabins to megwatt wind farms) and which to avoid. He guides wind-energy installers through considerations as varied as battery banks to renewable investment strategies and gives cautionary tales of wind applications gone wrong. And for the activist, he suggests methods of prodding federal and state governments to promote energy independence. Paul Gipe is internationally recognized for his expertise in wind energy. In 2008, he was awarded the World Energy Association’s “World Wind Energy Award.” He has been honored as a “Pioneer” by the World Renewable Energy Congress and as “Person of the Year” by the American Wind Energy Association. Gipe’s previous books are Wind Energy Comes of Age and Wind Power: Renewable Energy for Home, Farm, and Business. Gipe writes about wind energy and lectures extensively to both industry and general audiences. He lives in Tehachapi, California. Also by Paul Gipe: Wind Power, Revised Edition

Extensively revised and expanded by 70 percent. New topics include: • Urban wind: Does it make sense? • Building-integrated wind: Is it real or not? • Rooftop mounting:

A sweeping view of money—past, present, and future—including a plan to democratize the economy and restore the “credit commons.”

The End of Money and the Future of Civilization

Thomas H. Greco Jr. Like the proverbial fish who doesn’t know what water is, we swim in an economy built on money that few of us comprehend. And most definitely, what we don’t know is hurting us. Very few people realize that the nature of money has changed profoundly over the past three centuries, or—on the heels of the latest global financial crisis—the extent to which it has become a political instrument used to centralize power, concentrate wealth, and subvert popular government. On top of that, the economic growth imperative inherent in the present global monetary system is a main driver of global warming and other environmental crises. The End of Money and the Future of Civilization demystifies the subjects of money, banking, and finance by tracing historical landmarks and important evolutionary shifts that have changed the essential nature of money. Thomas H. Greco’s masterful work lays out the problems and then looks to the future for a next stage in money’s evolution that can liberate us as individuals and communities from the current grip of centralized and politicized money power. Greco provides specific design proposals, exchange-system architectures, and prescriptions for local, regional, national, and global financial systems. He offers strategies for their implementation and outlines actions grassroots organizations, businesses, and governments will need to take to achieve success. Ultimately, The End of Money and the Future of Civilization provides the necessary understanding—for entrepreneurs, activists, and civic leaders—to implement approaches toward monetary liberation. These approaches would empower communities, preserve democratic institutions, and begin to build economies that are sustainable, democratic, and insulated from the financial crises that plague the dominant monetary system. Thomas H. Greco, Jr. is a leading authority on free-market approaches to monetary and financial innovation, including cashless exchange systems. A former engineer, entrepreneur, and tenured college professor, Greco is now a sought-after advisor and speaker at conferences internationally. His previous books include Money: Understanding and Creating Alternatives to Legal Tender, New Money for Healthy Communities, and Money and Debt: A Solution to the Global Crisis. Through his Web site, reinventingmoney.com, and associated blogs and books, Greco offers an unprecedented wealth of information on the interplay of economics and democracy. He lives in the San Francisco Bay area and Tucson, Arizona. Also by Thomas H. Nostalgic and intoxicating, Libation—A Bitter Alchemy offers the bittersweet magic of perfume and palate, of experience and place.

Libation—A Bitter Alchemy

Deirdre Heekin For many years, Deirdre Heekin has been creating an unusual, revitalist wine archive of rare and traditional Italian varietals at Osteria Pane e Salute, the nationally celebrated restaurant and wine bar she shares with her chef husband, Caleb Barber. Self-taught in the world of Italian wines, she is known for her fine-tuned work with scent and taste, her ability to pair wines and food in unexpected yet terroir-driven ways. In Libation—A Bitter Alchemy, a series of linked personal essays, Heekin explores the curious development of her nose and palate, her intuitive education and relationship with wine and spirits, and her arduous attempts to make liqueurs and wine from the fruits of her own land in northern New England. The essays follow her as she unearths ruby-toned wines given up by the ghosts of long-gone wine makers from the red soil of Italy, her adoptive land. They journey with her on a complicated pilgrimage to the home of one of the world’s oldest cocktails, Sazerac, in Katrina-soaked New Orleans. They explore her midsummer crafting of a brandy made from inherited roses, the results of an old Sicilian recipe she found in a dusty bookstore in Naples. From campari to alkermes, Heekin’s writing is as intoxicating, rich, and carefully crafted as the wines, liquors, and locales she loves. Deirdre Heekin and Caleb Barber are the proprietors and, respectively, wine director and head chef of Osteria Pane e Salute, a boutique restaurant and wine bar in Woodstock, Vermont, which has received acclaim in Bon Appétit, the New York Times, and Attaché. Seasonal recipes and stories from an Italian kitchen.

In Late Winter We Ate Pears A Year of Hunger and Love

Deirdre Heekin and Caleb Barber, Proprietors of the Acclaimed Osteria Pane e Salute Combing Italy for rare and traditional recipes, husband and wife Caleb Barber and Deirdre Heekin bring the flavors and styles of many regions to their highly regarded restaurant, Osteria Pane e Salute (“bread and health”). Now they share that same food and spirit with In Late Winter We Ate Pears. More than a cookbook, In Late Winter We Ate Pears is a love affair with a culture and a way of life. In vignettes taken from their years in Italy, Heekin and Barber offer glimpses of a young, vibrant Italy: of rolling out pizza dough in an ancient hilltown at midnight while wild dogs bay in the abandoned streets; of the fogged car windows of an ancient lovers’ lane amid the olive groves outside Prato. The recipes in In Late Winter We Ate Pears are every bit as luscious as the memories. Selections such as red snapper with fennel sauce, fresh figs with balsamic vinegar and mint, and frangipane and plum tart capture the essence of Italy in their simple beauty. Following the tradition of Italian cuisine, the 80 recipes are laid out according to season, to take advantage of the freshest local ingredients. Whether you are an experienced cook looking for authentic Italian recipes or a beginner wanting to immerse yourself in the romance of a young couple’s culinary adventure, In Late Winter We Ate Pears provides rich sustenance in the best tradition of travel and food writing. Deirdre and Caleb grow much of their own produce in addition to working with local farm partners. The garden that Nature intended; the beauty and bounty that gardeners desire.

Gaia’s Garden, Second Edition A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture

Toby Hemenway Foreword by John Todd

Praise for the first edition: “Takes the native plants and organic gardening movement to the next level.” —Joel M. Lerner, Washington Post “A bold, wonderful, nature-embracing and completely sensible vision of the future.” —Justin Siskin, Los Angeles Daily News “Practical science for making your yard produce food and beauty.” —Rose O’Donnell, Seattle Times “A gardener’s blueprint for ecological abundance from the ground up.” —Steve Spreckel, Acres USA The first edition of Gaia’s Garden sparked the imagination of America’s home gardeners, introducing permaculture’s central message: working with Nature, not against her, results in more beautiful, abundant, and forgiving gardens. This extensively revised and expanded second edition broadens the reach and depth of the permaculture approach for urban and suburban growers. Many people mistakenly think that ecological gardening—which involves growing a wide range of edible and other useful plants—can take place only on a large, multiacre scale. As Hemenway demonstrates, it’s fun and easy to create a “backyard ecosystem” by assembling communities of plants that can work cooperatively and perform a variety of functions, including:

• Building and maintaining soil fertility and structure • Catching and conserving water in the landscape • Providing habitat for beneficial insects, birds, and animals • Growing an edible “forest” that yields seasonal fruits, nuts, and other foods

This revised and updated edition also features a new chapter on urban permaculture, designed especially for people in cities and suburbs who have very limited growing space. Whatever size of yard or garden you have to work with, you can apply basic permaculture principles to make it more diverse, more natural, more productive, and more beautiful. Toby Hemenway teaches permaculture and ecological design courses around the world and is on the faculty of Portland State University. A former geneticist, Toby left the biotech industry in the 1990s and spent ten years creating and living on a rural permaculture homestead in southern Oregon. He now lives in Portland, Oregon, where he is developing several urban sustainability sites. A hopeful, compassionate, and cautious look at four possible futures, and what we can do to prepare for

them in the face of global warming and peak oil.

Future Scenarios How Communities Can Adapt to Peak Oil and Climate Change

David Holmgren The simultaneous onset of climate change and peaking of global oil supply represent unprecedented challenges for human civilization. We now face less and less available energy each year, coupled with a destabilized climate. The overall challenge is intensified due to the fact that each of the individual challenges limits the effective options for responding to the other. In Future Scenarios, permaculture co-originator and leading sustainability innovator David Holmgren outlines four scenarios that bring to life the likely cultural, political, agricultural, and economic implications of peak oil and climate change, and the generations-long era of “energy descent” that faces us. “Scenario planning,” Holmgren explains, “allows us to use stories about the future as a reference point for imagining how particular strategies and structures might thrive, fail, or be transformed.” Future Scenarios depicts four very different futures. Each is a permutation of mild or destructive climate change, combined with either slow or severe energy declines. Probable futures, explains Holmgren, range from the relatively benign Green Tech scenario to the near catastrophic Lifeboats scenario. Future Scenarios fills a need for balanced consideration of the world’s options and will prove to be one of the most important books of the year. David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator, with Bill Mollison, of the permaculture concept following the publication of their book Permaculture One in 1978. Since then he has written several more books, including Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability, developed three properties using permaculture principles, and conducted workshops and courses throughout the world. Within the growing and international permaculture movement, David is respected for his commitment to presenting permaculture ideas through practical projects and teaching by personal example. He shows that a sustainable lifestyle is a realistic, attractive, and powerful alternative to dependent consumerism. Holmgren lives with his partner, Su Dennett, and their son, Oliver, at Melliodora, a one-hectare permaculture demonstration site at Hepburn Springs, Central Victoria, Australia. From “pancake patch” to small farm, how to grow grain in your home garden.

Small-Scale Grain Raising, Second Edition An Organic Guide to Growing, Processing, and Using Nutritious Whole Grains for Home

Gardeners and Local Farmers Gene Logsdon

First published in 1977, this book—from one of America’s most famous and prolific agricultural writers—became an almost instant classic among homestead gardeners and small farmers. Now fully updated and available once more, Small-Scale Grain Raising offers a whole new generation of readers the best introduction to a wide range of both common and lesser-known specialty grains and related field crops, from corn, wheat, and rye to buckwheat, millet, rice, spelt, flax, and even beans and sunflowers. More and more Americans are seeking out locally grown foods, yet one of the real stumbling blocks to their efforts has been finding local sources for grains, which are grown mainly on large, distant corporate farms. At the same time commodity prices for grains—and the products made from them—have skyrocketed due to rising energy costs and increased demand. In this book, Gene Logsdon proves that anyone who has access to a large garden or small farm can (and should) think outside the agribusiness box and learn to grow healthy whole grains or beans—the base of our culinary food pyramid—alongside their fruits and vegetables. Starting from the simple but revolutionary concept of the garden “pancake patch,” Logsdon opens up our eyes to a whole world of plants that we wrongly assume only the agricultural “big boys” can grow. He succinctly covers all the basics, from planting and dealing with pests, weeds, and diseases to harvesting, processing, storing, and using whole grains. There are even a few recipes sprinkled throughout, along with more than a little wit and wisdom. Never has there been a better time, or a more receptive audience, for this book. Localvores, serious home gardeners, CSA farmers, and whole-foods advocates—in fact, all people who value fresh, high-quality foods—will find a field full of information and ideas in this once and future classic. Gene Logsdon is the author of twenty-five books (and counting) embracing ecology, art, farming, cultural studies, and nature writing, including The Contrary Farmer and Farming at Nature’s Pace. He has written hundreds of magazine articles, has a weekly newspaper column (which can be seen at theprogressortimes.com), and contributes regularly to two quarterly magazines, Farming and The Draft Horse Journal, and to the Web site organictobe.org. He and his wife, Carol, operate an experimental garden farm in Wyandot County, Ohio. They have two children and three grandchildren. Business therapy for the soul of capitalism.

Living Above the Store Building a Business That Creates Value, Restores Community, and Protects the Natural World

Martin Melaver Foreword by Ray Anderson

Society is hungry for a new version of capitalism, where business is imbued with the values of ethical behavior and service, lives in harmony with society and nature, is devoted to lifelong learning, and is committed to restoring the health of community and nature. But how do we get there? In Living Above the Store, Martin Melaver provides a roadmap for creating such a business. It’s not only a “how to” but a “why to” that challenges business as usual to change. Living Above the Store brings us into the story of Melaver, Inc., a third-generation, 70-year-old family real estate business, as it evolves toward becoming a thought and product leader in sustainable business practices. It is part business management theory and part case study, where sustainable principles meet sustainable practices, always grounded in day-to-day practice. Living Above the Store demonstrates how to:

• Adopt a business model that provides for economic success while contributing to society and the environment

• Shape a business culture that is restorative to a workforce by helping employees realize their highest potential

• Leverage an ethos within a business that “ripples outward” to foster restoration of both land and community

• Embrace a notion of limits to growth • Reframe ideas about competition, proprietary knowledge, and business success

Living Above the Store is for readers who care about issues of community and sustainability as well as for those who want to learn more about how a socially responsible business can first redefine, and then find, success. Martin Melaver has been CEO of Melaver, Inc., since 1992. Never content with the well-trod path, he has a PhD in literature from Harvard University and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. He is actively involved with numerous community organizations in and around Savannah, Georgia. Melaver splits his time between Savannah and Tel Aviv, Israel. A scientific mystery. A political thriller. A matter of life and death.

Devil in the Milk Illness, Health, and Politics in A1 and A2 Milk

Keith Woodford This groundbreaking book is the first to be published internationally that examines the link between one of the proteins in the milk we drink and a range of serious illnesses, including heart disease, Type 1 diabetes, autism, and schizophrenia. These health problems are linked to a tiny protein fragment that is formed when we digest A1 beta-casein, a milk protein produced by many cows in America and northern European countries. Milk that contains A1 beta-casein is commonly known as A1 milk, whereas milk that does not is called A2. All milk was once A2, until a genetic mutation occurred some thousands of years ago in some European cattle. Herds in much of Asia, Africa, and parts of southern Europe remain naturally high in A2 cows. A2 milk from selected cows is now marketed in parts of the U.S. In Devil in the Milk, Keith Woodford brings together the evidence published in more than 100 scientific papers. He examines the population studies that look at the link between consumption of A1 milk and the incidence of heart disease and Type 1 diabetes; he explains the science that underpins the A1/A2 hypothesis; and he examines the research undertaken with animals and humans. The evidence is compelling: we should be switching to A2 milk. This is an amazing story, one that is not just about the health issues surrounding A1 milk, but also about how scientific evidence can be molded and withheld by vested interests, and how consumer choices are influenced by the interests of corporate business. Keith Woodford is Professor of Farm Management and Agribusiness at Lincoln University in New Zealand. A regular commentator in the news media, he was previously at the University of Queensland (Australia) for 20 years. He has worked on agricultural topics—and pursued his passion for mountaineering—in numerous countries around the world. He lives with his family in Christchurch, New Zealand. Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas: A riveting biography of three women who went off to probe humanity’s roots—and changed the face of modern field science in the process.

Now back in print!

Walking with the Great Apes Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Birute Galdikas

Sy Montgomery, with a New Introduction by the Author Three astounding women scientists have in recent years penetrated the jungles of Africa and Borneo to observe, nurture, and defend humanity’s closest cousins. Jane Goodall has worked with the chimpanzees of Gombe for over 30 years; Dian Fossey died in 1985 defending the mountain gorillas of Rwanda; and Birute Galdikas lives in intimate proximity to the orangutans of Borneo. All three began their work as protégées of the great Anglo-African archeologist Louis Leakey, and each spent years in the field, allowing the apes to become their familiars—and ultimately waging battles to save them from extinction in the wild. Their combined accomplishments have been mind-blowing, as Goodall, Fossey, and Galdikas forever changed how we think of our closest evolutionary relatives, of ourselves, and of how to conduct good science. From the personal to the primate, Sy Montgomery explores the science, wisdom, and living experience of three of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century. “Part Indiana Jones, part Emily Dickinson,” as the Boston Globe describes her, Sy Montgomery is an author, naturalist, documentary scriptwriter, and radio commentator who has traveled to some of the world’s most remote wildernesses for her work. She has worked in a pit crawling with 18,000 snakes in Manitoba, been hunted by a tiger in India, swum with pink dolphins in the Amazon, and been undressed by an orangutan in Borneo. She is the author of 13 award-winning books, including her national best-selling memoir, The Good Good Pig. Montgomery lives in Hancock, New Hampshire. A quest to identify a new species leads to the heart of Asia’s wildlife traffic— and to a historic discovery.

First paperback edition!

Search for the Golden Moon Bear

Science and Adventure in Pursuit of a New Species Sy Montgomery, with a New Introduction by the Author

Sy Montgomery has already shared with readers her amazing encounters with great apes, man-eating tigers, and pink river dolphins, but her latest muse is an animal whose name and appearance evoke another world altogether. Southeast Asia’s golden moon bear, with its luminous coat, lionlike mane, and Mickey Mouse ears, was unknown to science—until Montgomery and her colleagues got on the trail at the dawn of the new millennium. Search for the Golden Moon Bear recounts Montgomery’s quest—fraught with danger and mayhem—to reconstruct an evolutionary record and piece together a living portrait of her little-known subject. This beautiful animal is not just a scientific eureka!; it is also a powerful symbol of conservation. Search for the Golden Moon Bear is a field report from the frontiers of science and the ends of the earth, seamlessly weaving together folklore, natural history, and contemporary research into fantastic travelogue. “Part Indiana Jones, part Emily Dickinson,” as the Boston Globe describes her, Sy Montgomery is an author, naturalist, documentary scriptwriter, and radio commentator who has traveled to some of the world’s most remote wildernesses for her work. The answer to the grandest philosophical question of all time requires thinking outside the boxes of

conventional religious teaching and conventional scientific wisdom.

The Purpose of Life Science’s Surprising Answer to Religion’s Most Profound Question

A Sciencewriters Book Dorion Sagan and Eric D. Schneider

What is the purpose of life? Some say it's to reproduce, others to glorify God. But behind these and other proposed purposes lies a scientific purpose. In The Purpose of Life, science writer Dorion Sagan and ecologist Eric D. Schneider lay out the fascinating evidence for life’s natural purpose—its function in an energy-driven cosmos. New evidence shows that evolution is not at all random but has a clear direction. And its direction is related to life's function as a natural system. Indeed, life shares its function—its purpose—with that of certain other complex natural systems. While the answer is simple and not exclusive—life may have other purposes—its profound implications may change the way we see ourselves, our relationship to other living beings, and our future on this shared, energy-driven planet. Sagan and Schneider provide a striking alternative to common scientific and religious views of this age-old question. Written in an easy-to-read format that engages recent best sellers such as Rick Warren’s The Purpose-Driven Life and Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth: Finding Your Life's Purpose, The Purpose of Life goes beyond popular science, weaving literature, philosophy, and spirituality into a highly readable narrative that no curious person can afford to miss. Dorion Sagan is the author of twenty-one books translated into eleven languages, including Notes from the Holocene and Microcosmos (with Lynn Margulis). A Humana Scholar, Lindisfarne Fellow, and recipient of an EdPress Award in nonfiction, as well as an award-winning sleight-of-hand artist, Dorion has written for the New York Times, Wired, and the New York Times Book Review. He currently resides in Amherst, Massachusetts. Eric D. Schneider lives in the mountains of southwest Montana and spends his time between science and writing. He is best described as a biophysicist, synthesizing biology and physics at a fundamental level. He has been chief scientist of the National Oceanic Administration and director of the National Marine Quality Laboratory of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Schneider and Sagan coauthored Into the Cool: Energy Flow, Thermodynamics, and Life (University of Chicago Press, 2006), which has been a scientific best seller.
