DAN ARIELY

• Gave a TED speech entitled “What Makes Us Feel Good about Our Work

• Works at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina

• He is a professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics

What Motivates Us

»Mr. Ariely explored, during his presentation, what motivates people to work harder, longer.

»He asked if money, joy, reward motivated people to work harder.

Page 4: Charles kingtedslideshow

He found that :

MOTIVATION ≠ MONEY

MOTIVATION ≠ JOY

MOTIVATION = PURPOSE

Technique

• Dan attracted my attention with his very introduction

“Let’s discuss LABOR and WORK”

• Followed immediately by Rats in a Maze

Page 6: Charles kingtedslideshow

Technique Continued• He maintained my attention because he scattered

relatable examples throughout the presentation

• Including: The idea that mountain climbing is painful but we do it over and over again.

ALSOPowerPoint Presentation was well designed and interjected into the presentation at the right moments

Dynamism

3(he engaged the audience but he did not work

overtime to keep them involved.)

Page 8: Charles kingtedslideshow

• Dan had GOOD EYE CONTACT that touched each of the audience members but he never moved from his spot.

• At times I felt like he was forcing himself to stand still when moving a little closer or to the other side of the room would have been effective.

1. Start strong (be interesting)2. Keep it short3. Have good eye contact4. Ensure effective communication5. Tell a good Story (let me tell you about something that happened to my student ….)

Reynolds and Darte impact on the presentation

Page 10: Charles kingtedslideshow

I learned that delivery is like telling a GOOD story.

When I am comfortable and familiar with the topic I appear as a knowledgeable presenter.

KenRobinson

Ken was a different presenter from Dan in a number of ways. Most importantly, Ken opened with a JOKE to capture the audience instead of with a thought provoking concept.

Page 12: Charles kingtedslideshow

• His ability to insert humor captured the audience as well as kept them engaged throughout the presentation.

• The topic seemed so commonsense and almost like, “why didn’t I think of that sooner”

NO. 3 PRESENTATION TIP

HAVE A GOOD VISUAL AID (POWERPOINT/ PICTURES/ EXHIBIT)

Page 17: Charles kingtedslideshow

Watching Dan and Ken demonstrated two different styles. I was able to take strategies from both to improve my presentation presence.
