Before You Go In ….

The super hit novel : Three Men In a boat is all about three comical hypochondriacs who with their fox terrier take up a boat ride for rest. The whole novel runs smoothly and comically without any arrogance and violence. All the three characters are equally handsome but lazy out of which Harris is the laziest of all . I shall introduce you the prime person of this novel , The narrator J.

J . ( alias ) Jerome , the narrator

Jerome , the narrator is highly poetic , creative and quite lively , but is a hypochondriac. He consults a medical dictionary in the British museum and is convinced that he has all the diseases mentioned in it. He hates sea voyages, loves to watch sunsets, loves the beauty of night and its soothing effect on him. Night - for him, is like some great loving mother who gently lays her hand over his feverish head and removes his pain. He loves to camp out at night. He loves to muse and he comments on certain truths about human beings and life. He remarks that people don’t appreciate what they have , but long for the one which they don’t have. He possesses a sense of humour. He laughs at himself when he describes how they misbehaved when the German singer sang a song

He is a young, single middle-class man living in London. J is fond of history and literature and spends much of his time daydreaming about the days when knights roamed the countryside of England. This daydreaming sometimes gets him into trouble when he does not pay suitable attention to what he is doing. J, like his two friends on the boat trip, is a little vain and conceited, but he realizes it and pokes gentle fun at himself, his friends, and the habits of others like them through his anecdotes, where he and his friends are often the butt of ego-skewering jokes. J has always been fond of boats, but prefers the old fashioned. "J," lives and works in London.  He is taking a vacation along the Thames river along with two friends.  J. is confident and fairly jovial, always ready to exploit the funny failures of his two friends as he tells us, the readers, his story.  J. always makes himself seem better than his companions, he always seems to be "above" their immature antics. J. has a dog named Montmorency, and two friends, George and Harris. He sees himself as intelligent, hard-working, and competent, but his behavior in the novel suggests otherwise. He takes up everything for a joke. He doe not think practically. He lives the life he wants to. He does the work in the way in which he is asked to.
