Geography is important because of trade routes and natural resources. If a country is in the middle of a desert, it may have a hard time trading but it also may have a lot of oil that it can sell. If a country is in the mountains it may have a lot of mining resources, but may prevent them from trading. A country close to the water may have very good trade routes but may not have the greatest resources.
