ABOUT

CECFounded as a student-led organization on February

19th, 2011, Community English Club (CEC) is going to

celebrate its fifth birthday in 2016. As the year 2015 is

coming to an end, it is time for CEC to look back on

this eventful and successful year. For the past one

year, CEC has succeeded to follow its missions.Ảnh

• Assisting its members in advancing

English competence and applying for

scholarships through regular meet-up

activities.

• Implementing Bookworm’s Corner and

Vietnam Skype Project.

• Building up confidence, critical-thinking

and problem-solving competence for the

members.

• Reaching out to the community with a

volunteer campaign during summer

vacation.

CEC

MEET-UPS

Meet-ups often take place every Saturday morning at the

School of Foreign Languages. This year, CEC focused on

students’ oral English proficiency, team-building, leadership

skills and outdoor activities. Offline meetings not only help

students improve their English but also strengthen a close

relationship among CEC members. Meaningful numbers that

illustrate 2015 offline meetings are as below.

• 19 out of 28 meet-ups were outdoor

ones.

• Approximately 80 activities on various

aspects of English practice and soft

skills were planned and completed.

• 3 teams with at least 15 students of

various abilities were involved in

designing games, discussion topics and

other activities every week.

• Outdoor meet-up “Scavenger Hunt” in

April 12th was the biggest meeting with

54 participants.

CEC CONTESTS

Besides meet-ups, CEC also organized lots of mini

contests to create many wonderful playgrounds for

CEC members as well as students at SFL to join in. In

2015, CEC successfully held two contests.

The first contest was an English speaking competition

named “Talk to my teacher” which lasted from

November 9th to November 20th as a salutation to

the Vietnamese teacher’s day. This contest placed

an emphasis on students’ speaking skills and how

they use English to express themselves on a certain

topic. CEC received eight videos as eight

candidates taking part in the contest, showing their

respect and admiration to their cherished teachers.

The contest ended with seven awards.

The second contest was called “Bookworm’s photo

contest” which lasted from November 24th to

November 30th with thirteen candidates and four

awards. This contest aimed at introducing

Bookworm’s Corner to larger groups of students as

well as inspiring them with the passion for reading.

Overall, after organizing two contests, CEC received

many positive feedbacks and is expected to create

more exciting large scale contests next year.

EVENTS

In 2015, CEC’s roles in events maintained both leading

and collaborating. Together with the Youth Union of SFL,

CEC successfully organized one event and took part in

two big events.

Book Bucket Challenge was held by CEC in April 18th to

celebrate Global Youth Service Day. More than 200

books were donated by students in this event. Because

of the success in organizing a community involved event,

CEC was recognized as the official partner of YSA - Youth

Service America. In the first semester of academic year

2015 - 2016, CEC also participated in two big events:

Welcome freshmen to SFL and Halloween Disguise Party.

The haunted house that CEC members designed and

disguised as scary characters made a great impression

on both SFL teachers and students.

OUTREACH

2015 is another memorable year for CEC

when we held a special volunteer campaign

in summer called “Summer Kids Camp” at

Thai Nguyen social aid center in the middle

of August. This was the first time CEC visited

such a place with full of loss and homeless

people. In the morning, CEC visited the senior

citizens living in the center. CEC members

had an opportunity to listen to their stories

and thoughts about life. Those sharing helped

CECers discover more about the unusual lives

in the community.

In the afternoon, CEC met the children,

most of whom are orphans. After some

attempts to communicate with the kids in

the beginning, CEC finally got them

connected together through interesting

activities. In the evening, CEC ended up

with holding a small party with cakes,

cookies and soda for the kids, and also

promised to come back in the near future.

“Summer Kids Camp” was unforgettable

for CEC’s members because we became

more aware of doing practical campaign

to benefit the community.

Initiated by Ms. Duong

Huyen Tham, an English

lecturer at SFL, Bookworm’s

Corner has become one of

the two big projects that

CEC is running.

Bookworm’s Corner, located at English Department room, is

considered to be a mini library for those who desire to learn

more about written English and practice extensive reading.

With 120 book titles of various categories ranging from basic

to advanced reading competence, all written in English,

Bookworm’s Corner welcomes visitors six days per week and

offers extended days of borrowing for engaged readers. Up

to December 2015, 150 books have been borrowed by both

lecturers and students. Ms. Tham and CEC Team running this

project have just finished writing a proposal to raise funds for

this library.

Vietnam Skype Project was started by Ms. Tran Thi Hai Yen,

an English lecturer at SFL, in 2014. This year, Vietnam Skype

Project has been conducted by CEC in larger scale. This

project is meant to assist students in their speaking skills by

having them practice English with an international partner

over Skype. Each online lesson on a certain topic lasts at

least 45 minutes. Students participating in this project were

interviewed and selected carefully by CEC Board. Nearly

80 participants including English tutors from such many

English speaking countries as the United States, Great

Britain, Australia, Canada, the Philippines and so on, and

English majoring students at SFL are engaged in this project.
