Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation well known as CCE

refers to a system of school based assessment that covers all aspects of student’s development.

It emphasizes two fold objectives:•Continuity in evaluation •Assessment of broad based learning.

Continuous stands for assessment of a student throughout the year, not just

at the end of a term.

Continuous means regular assessments, frequency of unit testing, analysis of learning gaps, applying corrective measures, retesting and giving feedback to teachers and students for their self-evaluation, etc.

Continuous Assessment may be done formally or in an informal way using different techniques of evaluation.

Comprehensive on the other hand attempts to cover both the scholastic and the co-scholastic aspects of a student’s

growth and development.

Comprehensive takes care of assessment of all round development of a child’s

personality.

A child will be assessed not only in terms of his knowledge about a subject but his participation in other activities

also.

Broadly, we assess a child’s growth in two areas.

1. Scholastic2. Non Scholastic

The term Scholastic refers to those aspects , which are related to intellect or

the brain.

It is related to the assessment of learners in curricular subjects.

It includes assignments, projects, practical, etc.

The term Co-scholastic refers to those aspects which are related to hand and

heart.

Types of evaluation process in CCE

1. Formative Assessment (F.A)

2. Summative Assessment (S.A)

Formative assessment includes all types of tests, projects and observations both formal

and informal.

Formative Assessment can be done during the teaching process or after completing a

unit.

The periodicity of the assessment

The entire academic year is divided into two terms. The periodicity of

assessment is thrice in a term.

Formative Assessment: It includes-•Class work •Quizzes •Home Assignment •Worksheets •Oral tests•Assignments•Group discussion •Group activity •Experiments •Projects •Conversation/ Interview •The record of FA will be maintained by the class teacher and subject teachers.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT (SA)This is the most traditional way of testing.

It is paper pen test based on the curriculum taught, during the specified time period/term. assessment is once in aThe periodicity of the term.

How will the assessment be done ? A school session is divided into two terms

First term – April to September.

Second term – October to March.

Each term has two F.A and one S.A.

Students will be assessed based on the syllabus covered in a term.

Mathematics

A. Formative Assessment: Following areas must be assessed during the term continuously

Concepts: Based on regular tests and classroom participation in the subject and continuous observation of the teacher

Math Lab Activity: Conducting doing activities based on a topic

Mental Ability & Puzzles: Giving problems, tasks, etc. with a stipulated time. It can both written, oral or performing type.

Multiplication tables

Class Work: Teachers obervation on submission, completion of work, classroom participation, etc.

Class Assignment: Periodical tests

B. Summative Assessment: A written assessment conducted at the end of a term.

ScienceA. Formative AssessmentScience Reference work: Students must be encouraged to refer other science books, encyclopedias, science magazines, articles on newspaper etc.

Science Presentation: Class must be divided into two or three groups and must be given a chance to present a lesson or a portion of a lesson in the class.

Experiments: Practical + Journal

Analytical Activities: Students must be given certain tasks, projects which promotes scientific temper and analytical reasoning of children.

You might have seen subject-wise competencies in the slides. But it is not necessary to mention the competencies in the Achievement Record of the child. You may enter all the data in the Assessment Register and enter only marks and grades in the Achievement Record.

GRADING SYSTEMThe performance of a child in scholastic area will be assessed in terms of marks.

Report card must show both marks and grades.

Marks will be converted into grades in the following manner.

Points To Remember

Students should keep the record of their achievements/participation in all the activities inside or outside the school.

It is mandatory for every child to appear for both the summative assessments.

If for some valid reasons, one fails to appear for any summative assessment, he/she will be re-assessed.

After obtaining the qualifying grades he/she will be promoted to the next class.

TEACHERS SHOULD KEEP IN MIND

Use a variety of tools (orals, projects, presentations).

Understand different learning styles and abilities.

Share the assessment criteria with the students.

Allow peer and self assessment.

Give an opportunity to the student to improve.

CCE helps in reducing stress of students by-Identifying learning progress of students at regular time intervals on small portions of content.

Employing a variety of remedial measures of teaching based on learning needs and potential of different students. Desisting from using negative comments on the learner’s performance.

Encouraging learning through employment of a variety of teaching aids and techniques.

Involving learners actively in the learning process.

Recognizing and encouraging specific abilities of students, who do not excel in academics but perform well in other co-curricular areas.

Summary:

The academic year is divided into two terms.

CCE will cover the scholastic and co scholastic areas of school education.

The two types of assessment are formative and summative.

The periodicity of the two types of assessment are four times and twice a year respectively.

Formative Assessment totals to 60% . Summative Assessment totals to 40% .

There are nine grades in Part A of Scholastic assessment and Part B of the same assessment has five grades.

Scholastic areas are divided into formative and Summative assessment and covers academic skills and competencies.

Non scholastic areas cover personality, attitudes , life skills, etc and there are three grades.

If a student secures Grade 6 in the academic areas his/her marks would range from 51% to 60%.

CCE advocates absolute grading. This means that Grade 9 would imply an A2 grade.
