Scheduling *

You will work your assigned shift from July 6 – August 31.

If you are going to be late or cannot come in at all, call the Youth Services desk: 703-737-8105.

If you’ll be away for a vacation, let us know!

When You Arrive for Your Shift *

Please arrive on time! Wear your volunteer badge. Always check in with the

Children’s Librarian at the desk.

Expectations

Volunteering is like a job. Be on time and act in a professional manner. You are representing the library, a county government institution.

Be polite and courteous to patrons; ask them if they need assistance.

Expectations, continued

When volunteering, it is inappropriate to babysit your brother or sister.

If there is a situation or questions you feel uncomfortable with, excuse yourself and find a staff member immediately.

If a patron asks you a questions, simply say, “Let’s ask the librarian.” Then ASK!

Getting Yellow Bins

Look for yellow bins behind the Librarians’ desk.

Then check in the Circulation Room. Check for bins near BOTH the inside and outside check-in areas.

Place a bin on a flat cart and roll it into the Children’s Area.

Shelving Series Books

They are shelved in the Series Area. Shelve the books by SERIES. There are

labels on the shelves with each series’ name.

Shelving Series Books

**GRAPHIC NOVELS- these are the only books in the Series Area that are shelved by the Call Number on their spines.

Shelving Board Books

They are shelved in the wooden bins under the posters.

Board books do not have shelving order.

As you place board books in the wooden bins, straighten them.

If you see a board book that is torn, take it to a Librarian.

Shelving Easy Reader Fiction

The Librarians will create an Easy Reader cart for you.

These books are shelved on the Easy Reader “wall.”

They are shelved by Call Number.

General Pick Up of Children’s Area

Collect all the books from tables, furniture, and/or floor.

Place the items you collected on the dump cart.

Straighten Christmas books under the Board Book bins.

Sort items on the Dump Cart by spine label.

Group the items as follows:

DVDs)

Organize Christmas Books

A Librarian can help you get started on this job. Re-shelve Christmas books by the call number on

their spine labels. Shelve the Christmas books in call number order.

Other Duties

You may be asked to help with a variety of tasks or projects as assigned by one of the Librarians. (help with program set up, straighten shelves throughout the children’s area, mark discarded items for sale, etc.)

We will divide into 4 teams, by color of brochure.

Your team will receive a “point” for each question answered correctly and each task completed correctly.

Each team will have a bin with books to be shelved:

Board books. Series books. Easy Reader books.

Each team’s books have color slips in them, keep them in the books!

Team members work together to ensure each item is shelved in the correct area and, if necessary, by correct call number order. (remember Graphic Novels & Easy Readers!)

This is not a timed race, you are trying for 100% shelving accuracy.

When all the teams are finished, we will check one another’s work.

General Pick Up

What do you do with the books you pick up from tables, the floor, and furniture?

Place them on the Dump Cart.

Can you sort a Dump Cart? Yes! – remember groupings E w/letters E w/numbers Same for ER & J! One person from each team will

work on sorting the dump cart. Tag Team – if someone needs help,

tag another team member to take over.

When You Leave Your Shift

Let the Librarian know your shift has ended and briefly explain any tasks you had to leave incomplete.

Log your time and task online! Example:
