Can Open Innovation Catalyze Science & Engineering in Africa?
(African) administrators, who operate between multilateral institutions and individual investigators, are in critical need of expert attention applied toward strategic planning.
Diop , World Bank’s Africa Region Vice
President, is passionate about promoting STEM –
science, technology, engineering and
mathematics. He believes that advancing these fields
of study is crucial to sustaining Africa’s
development…. World Bank is betting big on STEM,
investing $150 million in an initiative called the Africa
Centers of Excellence.

links between open education & open science and Engineering innovation in Africa
• Translates all the intermediate R & D deliverables into freely available objects for design and translation• Creates new classes or objects to be incorporated into
open education blend learning• Necessitates the development of open service business
models which may focus on the bundling of services
An open call to action…..• Recommendation #1: There should be an open Education Developer
Community focused on incorporating intermediate deliverables for/from research, translation, development and design into open learning platforms.
• Recommendation #2: The community must recognize that they are delivering educational products to a much larger cohort than students….ie. Hospital administrators, managers, tech transfer offices, government.
• Recommendation #3: Each stakeholder in open science and engineering must learn how to operate in the spiral innovation framework
