• The internet provides a great number of tools that can enhance the learning and teaching experience in the classroom.

Tools?

• The tools of the internet could mean:

• Social Networking

• Wiki’s

• Basic Web pages.

Page 4: Case study: 2 technological artefacts

Social Networking

• Social Networking sites are set up to gain or retain social interaction between users.

• These sites can have social, commercial and educational purposes

• The most famous example of this is Facebook.

• Edmodo is essentially a social networking site for teachers and students.

• It is a great example of an internet ‘artefact’ that would be useful for a number of reasons:

1. Ability to share coarse content 24/7. This means that the learning does not stop at the end of the school day.

2. Teacher has full control of the content. This is to make sure that only the relative info for the class can be accessed on the site.

Page 7: Case study: 2 technological artefacts

3. In regards to history, Edmodo can be used as a ‘launch pad’ to great historical resources found by the teacher and other students.

4. Students can interact with each other instantly through Edmodo to help with discussion and assignments.

Edmodo is a great tool to use as a teacher as it not only keeps the students and the teacher better connected, it maintains student understanding of learning through not only its availability but also its interactive nature. http://www.google.com.au/imgres?q=facebook+like&hl=en&safe=off&gbv=2&tbm=isch&tbnid=dvnhYVDR5iIgaM:&imgrefurl=http://net-technews.blogspot.com/2011/05/facebook-like-button-importance.html&docid=HK2Ed0VAOYLlGM&w=1375&h=1279&ei=7hNXTt3XFJPTiAK76tC-CQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=218&vpy=294&dur=437&hovh=155&hovw=167&tx=95&ty=82&page=1&tbnh=155&tbnw=167&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0&biw=1366&bih=667

Web Page

• Is similar to a wiki as it is created to share content with users.

• However, a web page can have a purpose other then content sharing. This can include:

• Financial, to make a profit.

• Political, to spread awareness.

Page 10: Case study: 2 technological artefacts

World War-2.net

• This is an example of a web page that shares content about World War Two.

• This is a bad example of an internet ‘artefact’ for various reasons.

Page 11: Case study: 2 technological artefacts

1. It is not referenced or reviewed by academics. This compromises the reliability of the content shown on this web page.

2. It has advertisements. This means that this website has a financial purpose (to make money).

Page 12: Case study: 2 technological artefacts

3. No interaction, the content on the page is there to stay wether it is accurate or not.

4. It’s content only vaguely explains the events of World War 2.

Page 13: Case study: 2 technological artefacts

This page (World War-2.net) looks good at first glance but it ultimately fails to convey adequate referencing into its content. This type of artefact should only be used in the classroom for a general background to the historical event, rather then as a means for enhancing knowledge about World War 2.

Conclusion.

• The internet provides a vast amount of tools which enables people to enhance their knowledge.

• However, most sites on the internet are built for reasons other than educational which is a problem for teachers and students.

Page 15: Case study: 2 technological artefacts

• Therefore: it is up to the user (in regards to education, the teacher) to sift through the tools of the internet to find the right sites to enhance knowledge.

• While the internet contains a lot of bad artefacts when it comes to education, there are sites that enable students and teachers to enhance their understanding of certain content better than ever before.
