Production involves the creation process, recording and editing necessary to generate audio for the project; and post-production involves the refinement, quality assurance and mastery of an audio project. Live audio engineering includes all careers involved in the planning, set up and creation of a quality live auditory experience. Each category requires technicians and specialists with specific skills.

SKILLS REQUIREDTo pursue a career in Music Production, an individual must love music and understand all aspects of music and the creative process, and to fully understand the technology that would help bringing the art to life. The career involves theoretical knowledge and hands-on abilities in order to be able to maneuver between aesthetics and technical tasks. CAREER TYPESHere are some jobs one may choose to acquire when studying and pursuing a career in Music Production.

STUDIO ENGINEER: TRACKING, MIXING & ASSISTANT

Generally, studio engineers work with technical sound equipment to create audio recordings in a studio setting and can be involved in a wide variety of audio industry jobs including those in music, film, television and radio. Studio Engineers set up, operate and ensure the maintenance of the different types of recording equipment in a professional studio. Their job is essential to the quality of the production.

MIX ENGINEER

A Mix engineer is the person that takes all the tracks that have been recorded by the Tracking Engineer and puts them together to a final version. This could mean anything from making the vocals and instrumentals sound balanced in levels to adjusting the dynamics and frequency spectrum of the individual sound components and the addition of effects such as reverbs and delays. A mixing engineer is an artist that can see all the pieces and how they might fit best.

ASSISTANT ENGINEERS

An assistant engineer is responsible for setting up a studio before a recording session and ensuring that no time is wasted in set up. Once the recording is in session, an assistant engineer helps the recording engineer with anything he/she may need from patching of gear, adjusting microphone placement, studio/gear documentation, wrapping of cables and microphone inventory after the session has completed.

TRACKING ENGINEER

The Tracking Engineer is the one responsible for the recording process. This can be music, dialog, Foley, on-set production, live venue recordings, etc. If there is a microphone and a sound source the Tracking engineer is the one to capture, preserve and recall the sound source. In the studio the tracking engineer works hand in hand with the Producer to capture the sound to their liking, such as guitar and drum tones.

LIVE SOUND ENGINEER: FRONT OF HOUSE & MONITOR

The sound engineer serves as the backbone of every live performance. He or she makes sure that any audio or sound picked up by microphones, amplifiers and equipment is processed properly to create proper balance between the output of each instrument and the singer or live performer. This job is essential in the creation of a pleasing auditory experience for the audience that exemplifies the talent of the performer. Front of House sets the mix levels for the audience and a monitor engineer sets the on-stage mix for the performers.

The post-production engineer is responsible for turning raw, recorded audio or video into a polished final product ready for release. In addition, those that work in post-production create audio content that may not have been done during production such as gun shots, explosions, foot steps, doors and ambience. They finalize audio, secure proper sequencing, ensure the delivery of the highest quality product and generally act as the gateway between the studio and the audience.studio and the audience.

VIDEO GAME SOUND DESIGNER

Video game sound designers create the music, sound effects, dialog, audio implementation into the gaming environment and interludes that move video games forward in a realistic and engaging way for the user while enhancing the gaming experience.

MASTERING ENGINEER

A mastering engineer's job is to look at the entirety of an audio recording and make sure it has a uniform style and sound before it goes into distribution. The job requires knowledge and talent in an abundant number of DAW’s (digital audio workstations) and outboard gear. Mastering Engineers are the bridge between art and technology, often serving as the quality assurance for the final version of a music album, soundtrack or other form of audio. Mastering engineers have years of experience with the right gear, room, etc. and can truly discern the tiniest of elements and what makes a track sound good or excellent.

MUSIC PRODUCER

Producers are the people who guide artists, engineers, and musicians through the entirety of audio projects. Producers are deeply involved in every phase and area of the project, from the recording sessions, editing, mixing and mastering. Since they are the spearhead in both the creative and business aspects of an audio project they also make sure everything is done on time, within budget and to the highest quality possible.

COMPOSER

The main task of the composer is to write an original composition for a specific audio project, which will be performed by a musician or ensemble such as an orchestra. Modern Composers are also required to use digital Audio, MIDI and Virtual Instrument technologies to realize their scores and create fully produced ‘mock ups’ that are master quality and realistic sounding. There is a wide variety of musical styles and genres, and even more so with the rapid evolution of music production tools, so it is important that the composer must always make sure the music suits the desired project.
