1. Introduction
Marine Engineering is an exciting and challenging career which deals with
manufacturing, designing and operation of ship machinery and engines. It is one of
the disciplines of engineering which deals with science and nautical architecture.
The marine engineers are engaged in supervising the engine crew involved in
operating the machines. They also check for the smooth functioning of all electric
motors, steam engines and propulsive engines etc. The marine engineers
continuously take efforts to improve the efficiencies of gas turbine, existing
shipboard conventional steam, nuclear propulsion plants and diesel. This is the best
field for getting excellent government jobs.
i. A brief history about Marine Engineering
The history of Marine Engineering dates back to the beginning of the Industrial
Revolution (early 1700s). In 1712 Thomas Newcomen, a blacksmith, created a
steam powered engine to pump water out of mines. In 1807 Robert
Fulton successfully used a steam engine to propel a vessel through the water.
Fulton's ship used the engine to power a small wooden paddle wheel as its
propulsion system. The integration of steam engines into ships was the start of
the Marine Engineering profession.
Before the integration of engines in ships, the maritime professions consisted of
deck department jobs. This was because there was no engine for engineers to
work on. The type of propulsion used before the engine powered paddlewheel
was wind power.
Around 50 years later the steam powered paddle wheels had a peak with the
creation of the Great Eastern, which was as big as one of the cargo ships of today,
700 feet in length, weighing 22,000 tons.
Marine Engineers work on more than just engines in ships. Marine engineers are
also responsible for building and maintaining offshore oil rigs. These oil rigs
were first made by Henry L. Williams in 1896.
Victoria Alexandrina Drummond MBE (1894–1978), was the first woman
marine engineer in Britain and first woman member of Institute of Marine
Engineers. In World War II she served at sea as an engineering officer in the
British Merchant Navy and received awards for bravery under enemy fire.

2. Nature of Work and Working conditions
They design, construct and develop nautical equipments. After completing
Marine Engineering courses candidates can option for lucrative career options in
public and private shipping companies, engine production firms, ship building
and designing firms, navy, research bodies. After graduating as a marine
engineer, one can get a job in a ship as a third assistant engineer or fourth
engineer. They can also get employed in different foreign and Indian shipping
companies.
Marine Engineers working on Ships or Rigs work on High- Sea, while
those in design of ships, navigational technology and consulatncy may
work on Land in an office.
It is a team work
On High seas and vigilance they have shift system, while in design and
technology they generally have day-shift
Mainly on High- Seas (90%) and 10 % off-shore job
1.2% is the Rate of accidents

7. Career Prospects in general
After successful completion of BE/BTech in Marine Engineering/nautical science,
one can join as fourth engineer or third assistant engineer. Since the job on the ship
entails residing on ship for a major part of the year there are other exciting avenues
as well.
Marine engineers are also employed by engine production firms, ship building
firms, research bodies, ship design firms and also in the Indian Navy.
The marine engineers can remain within the ambit of the shipping industry and join
8
marine workshops at land i.e. at the ports. Alternatively, the marine engineers can
join ship manufacturing companies, which are equally good paymasters.
These days the marine engineers are employed in the IT sector in a major way,
apart from consultancy companies like Price Waterhouse Coopers and DCL, in
construction companies, power sector, steel industry, and electronic industry.
Those who want to join Government Service can consider Directorate General
Shipping of India. Those with entrepreneurial skills can also explore the
entreprenuerial scope in the field.
Those marine engineers who have a passion for academics can pursue post
graduation and enter the field of academics where the demand for qualified
academicians in this field is growing very fast.
Career Prospects for women:
Currently world over 4% of marine engineers are women
In India since 1996, 17 women have qualified as Marine engineers, which
is 0.08% of the total number of Marine Engineers in India
Performance- ' It becomes imperative for the woman to prove herself, to
establish herself, she ends up putting in extra effort and time.
Male-dominated profession. So women need to have Attitude for problems
solving
No problems like sexual harassment and discrimination at the workplace,
because women are treated as equals and expected to perform the same tasks
as men do.
After all, shipping is a business and the owner is paying huge money for the
ship to be in good shape. "So whether it's a man or woman, the job has to be
done,"
8. Conclusion
Marine engineering has a great scope in India. With demand for fossil fuel, trade and
transport, Sea- tourism, Naval Security and Geological exploration the scope of
marine engineering courses give plenty of opportunities on and off shores .
