The “DOTS” model (Law and Watts:1977/1996)
The ‘DOTS’ model is a four stage model of career planning originally developed by Bill Law and Tony Watts of the National Institute for Careers Education and Counselling. It has 4 stages which are:
D: Decision Learning (Career Exploration and Decision Making)
O: Opportunity Awareness (Research Skills)
T: Transition Learning (Careers literature, Fairs, Work Experience)
S: Self Awareness (Self-Assessment)
The “SDOT” model (University of Liverpool)
The SODT model can be simplified as follows:
Self Awareness Who am I? Opportunity Awareness Where am I?Decisions Making What will I do?Transition Skills Where will I do it?

• Strategic directions (guidance, placement, curriculum, learning organisation models)
• Implications – restructuring careers as academic service rather than student service, separate teaching unit for career development learning
